The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  15th February 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Libel (noun)

Meaning: a published false statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation; a written defamation. (निंदलेख)

Synonyms: defamation, misrepresentation, vilification

Antonyms: praise, respect, commendation

Sentence: The governor’s office issued a statement accusing the state’s largest newspaper of libel.

  1. Pursuance (noun)

Meaning: the carrying out of a plan or action. (अनुसरण)

Synonyms: implementation, carrying out, fulfilment

Antonyms: non-performance, nonfulfillment

Sentence: They may need to borrow money in pursuance of their legal action.

  1. Redundancy (noun)

Meaning: the state of being not or no longer needed or useful. (बेकार)

Synonyms: futile, purposeless, useless

Sentence: It is absurd to be discussing compulsory redundancy policies for teachers.

  1. Frazzle (noun)

Meaning: the state of being completely exhausted (थकी हुई अवस्था)

Synonyms: exhaustion, fatigue, lethargy

Antonyms: refreshment, energy, rejuvenation

Sentence: The meeting left me feeling completely frazzled.

  1. Teed off (verb)

Meaning: feeling or showing anger (गुस्सा होना)

Synonyms: ballistic, angry, infuriated

Antonyms: pleased, accepting, delighted

Sentence: He teed off on the Labour Government policies.

  1. Goof (noun)

Meaning: a stupid person (मूर्ख)

Synonyms: idiot, moron, stupid

Antonyms: genius, brain, whiz

Sentence: I just stood there like a goof waiting for him to introduce her.

  1. Secern (verb)

Meaning: to understand or point out the difference in (अलग)

Synonyms: differentiate, distinguish, discern

Antonyms: confound, mingle

Sentence: And still, less is he able to secern the truth from the falsehood

  1. Intuitive (adj.)

Meaning: using or based on what one feels to be true even without conscious reasoning; instinctive. (स्वाभाविक)

Synonyms: instinctive, intuitional, instinctual

Sentence: Men are often regarded as less intuitive than women.

  1. Interdict (noun)

Meaning: an authoritative prohibition. (पाबंदी)

Synonyms: prohibition, ban, embargo

Antonyms: allowing, permission, granting

Sentence: Troops could be ferried in to interdict drug shipments

  1. Profundity (noun)

Meaning: deep insight; great depth of knowledge or thought. (बुद्धिमत्ता)

Synonyms: wisdom(deep), insight, intelligence

Antonyms: stupidity, witlessness

Sentence: He lacked profundity and analytical precision.
