The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  15th June 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Ascension (noun)

Meaning: the act of rising to an important position or a higher level. (अधिरोहण)

Synonyms: ascent, climb, rise

Antonyms: descent, downfall, downgrade

Sentence: His ascension to the ranks of pop star.

  1. Foreboding (noun)

Meaning: fearful apprehension; a feeling that something bad will happen. (पूर्वाभास)

Synonyms: apprehension, perturbation, trepidation

Antonyms: anticipation, excitement

Sentence: I felt a gloomy foreboding that something was going to go wrong.

  1. Avowedly (adv.)

Meaning: as has been asserted, admitted, or stated publicly; openly. (स्पष्टतया)

Synonyms: clear-cut, asserted, averred

Antonyms: denied, disregarded

Sentence: The article is avowedly a historical analysis.

  1. Conciliatory (adj.)

Meaning: intended or likely to placate or pacify. (शांति)

Synonyms: propitiatory, placatory, appeasing

Antonyms: antagonizing, abrasive, aggravating

Sentence: Everyone was in a conciliatory mood at the start of the meeting.

  1. Humbug (noun)

Meaning: deceptive or false talk or behavior. (पाखण्ड)

Synonyms: hypocrisy, insincerity, dishonesty

Antonyms: original, genuine

Sentence: There were all the usual humbug and obligatory compliments from ministers.

  1. Vapid (adj.)

Meaning: offering nothing that is stimulating or challenging. (नीरस)

Synonyms: insipid, uninspired, tepid

Antonyms: amazing, astonishing, astounding

Sentence: The vapid conversation bored her.

  1. Empathize (verb)

Meaning: understand and share the feelings of another. (सहानुभूति)

Synonyms: commiserate, condole, sympathize

Antonyms: demoralize, discourage, dishearten

Sentence: I clearly empathize with the people who live in those neighborhoods.

  1. Boulevard (noun)

Meaning: a wide street in a town or city, typically one lined with trees. (मार्ग)

Synonyms: avenue, street, road

Sentence: They replaced the narrow streets with a wide boulevard.

  1. Stolid (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) calm, dependable, and showing little emotion or animation. (सुस्त)

Synonyms: impassive, phlegmatic, unemotional

Antonyms: demonstrative, emotional, fervent

Sentence: He’s a very stolid, serious man.

  1. Splintered (verb)

Meaning: break or cause to break into small sharp fragments. (कुचले)

Synonyms: shatter, break into tiny pieces, break into fragments

Antonyms: unbroken, fixed, repaired

Sentence: I don’t know who has splintered the plates.
