‘Vocabulary’

  1. Agonizing (adj.)

Meaning: causing great physical or mental pain. (अति पीड़ा देनेवाला)

Synonyms: excruciating, harrowing, racking

Antonyms: gratifying, pleasing, sweet

Sentence: This is a torturous, agonizing way to kill someone.

  1. Elapse (verb)

Meaning: (of time) pass or go by. (बीतना)

Synonyms: pass, go by/past, proceed

Antonyms: halt, hold, wait

Sentence: So a week or so may elapse between the first and the last eggs hatching.

  1. Beguile (verb)

Meaning: charm or enchant (someone), sometimes in a deceptive way. (मोहना)

Synonyms: charm, attract, enchant

Antonyms: expose, undeceive, reveal

Sentence: The teacher used to beguile her pupils with fairy tales.

  1. Tenable (adj.)

Meaning: able to be maintained or defended against attack or objection. (लायक़)

Synonyms: defensible, justifiable, defendable

Antonyms: indefensible, untenable, unjustifiable

Sentence: Such a simplistic approach is no longer tenable.

  1. Gelid (adj.)

Meaning: icy; extremely cold. (ठंढा)

Synonyms: frozen, freezing, icy

Antonyms: ardent, blazing, boiling

Sentence: I can still recall that gelid winter morning, with the cold wind whistling around my ears

  1. Pelt (verb)

Meaning: attack (someone) by repeatedly hurling things at them. (मारना)

Synonyms: bombard, shower, attack

Antonyms: defend, uncover

Sentence: The children pelt each other with snowballs.

  1. Averse (adj.)

Meaning: having a strong dislike of or opposition to something. (विरुद्ध)

Synonyms: opposed to, against, antipathetic to

Antonyms: friendly, sympathetic, tolerant

Sentence: We are averse to such noisy surroundings.

  1. Appeasement (noun)

Meaning: the action or process of appeasing. (मनौती)

Synonyms: conciliation, placation, pacification

Antonyms: discomfort, unrest

Sentence: Music is appeasement to shattered nerves.

  1. Onus (noun)

Meaning: used to refer to something that is one’s duty or responsibility. (बोझ)

Synonyms: burden, responsibility, liability

Antonyms: award, credit, honor

Sentence: The onus is on you to show that you have suffered loss.

  1. Sumptuous (adj.)

Meaning: splendid and expensive-looking. (वैभवशाली)

Synonyms: lavish, luxurious, deluxe

Antonyms: economical, frugal, meager

Sentence: The guests turned up dressed in sumptuous evening gowns.
