In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have the English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.
‘Vocabulary’
- Aridity (noun)
Meaning: as in dehydration, dryness (सूखेपन)
Synonyms: dehumidification, dehydration, dryness
Antonyms: dampness, humidity, moisture
Sentence: Due to the high elevation and aridity, temperatures drop sharply after sunset.
- Venal (adj.)
Meaning: showing or motivated by susceptibility to bribery. (घूसख़ोर)
Synonyms: corrupt, corruptible, bribable
Antonyms: incorruptible, ethical, honest
Sentence: They are accused of being involved in venal practices.
- Flimsy (adj.)
Meaning: comparatively light and insubstantial; easily damaged. (कमज़ोर)
Synonyms: insubstantial, slight, light
Antonyms: sturdy, substantial
Sentence: The storm flattened the flimsy wooden huts that the villagers lived in.
- Pandemonium (noun)
Meaning: wild and noisy disorder or confusion; uproar. (विप्लव)
Synonyms: bedlam, chaos, mayhem
Antonyms: calm, hush, peace
Sentence: There was pandemonium when the news was announced.
- Spew (verb)
Meaning: expel large quantities of (something) rapidly and forcibly. (निकाल डालना)
Synonyms: emit, discharge, eject
Sentence: The drains spew millions of gallons of raw sewage into the river.
- Shunning (verb)
Meaning: persistently avoid, ignore, or reject (someone or something) through antipathy or caution. (त्यागना)
Synonyms: avoid, evade, eschew
Antonyms: accepting, seeking
Sentence: She has shunned publicity since she retired from the theatre.
- Geriatric (noun)
Meaning: an old person who is receiving special care. (बुज़ुर्ग लोग)
Synonyms: elder, senior, senior citizen
Antonyms: youngster, youth
Sentence: The geriatric patients will be moved out.
- Flouted (verb)
Meaning: openly disregard (a rule, law, or convention). (उल्लंघन)
Synonyms: defy, refuse to obey, disdain
Antonyms: accepted, approved
Sentence: The union had openly flouted the law.
- Obligatory (adj.)
Meaning: required by a legal, moral, or other rules; compulsory. (अनिवार्य)
Synonyms: compulsory, mandatory, prescribed
Antonyms: elective, optional, voluntary
Sentence: The college authorities have now made these classes obligatory.
- Vexatious (adj.)
Meaning: causing or tending to cause annoyance, frustration, or worry. (अफ़सोसनाक)
Synonyms: annoying, vexing, irritating
Antonyms: delightful, pleasing
Sentence: Those vexatious phone calls from telemarketers during the dinner hour.
