The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  16th May 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Exuberance (noun)

Meaning: the quality of being full of energy, excitement, and cheerfulness; ebullience. (जोश-ख़रोश)

Synonyms: ebullience, jazziness, peppiness

Antonyms: inactivity, lifelessness, dullness

Sentence: She was laughing from the sheer exuberance of the performance.

  1. Savvy (noun)

Meaning: shrewdness and practical knowledge; the ability to make good judgments. (सामान्य बुद्धि)

Synonyms: shrewdness, astuteness, sharp-wittedness

Antonyms: foolish, dumb, silly

Sentence: she’s an excellent scholar of political science, but lacks the kind of savvy needed to run for public office

  1. Rummaged (verb)

Meaning: search unsystematically and untidily through a mass or receptacle. (अफवाह फैलाया)

Synonyms: search (through), hunt through, scrabble around in

Antonyms: ignored, neglected

Sentence: He rummaged through the jumble of papers on his desk.

  1. Niggling (adj.)

Meaning: causing slight but persistent annoyance, discomfort, or anxiety. (तुच्छ)

Synonyms: inconsiderable, insignificant, measly

Antonyms: big, consequential, considerable

Sentence: Don’t waste time on niggling details.

  1. Snappy (adj.)

Meaning: moving, proceeding, or acting with great speed (तेज़)

Synonyms: blistering, lightning, speedy

Antonyms: slow, dilatory, dawdling

Sentence: Bring us some more french fries and make it snappy!

  1. Fissures (noun)

Meaning: a long, narrow opening or line of breakage made by cracking or splitting, especially in rock or earth. (दरारें)

Synonyms: opening, crevice, crack

Sentence: Lava flows up through a fissure in the earth’s crust.

  1. Opprobrium (noun)

Meaning: harsh criticism or censure. (अपमान)

Synonyms: vilification, abuse, vituperation

Antonyms: esteem, honor, respect

Sentence: The government did not deserve the opprobrium heaped on it by the national press.

  1. Pithily (adv.)

Meaning: in a few words (मतलब की बात)

Synonyms: briefly, compactly, concisely

Antonyms: diffusely, long-windedly, verbosely

Sentence: The observation that “War is hell” is how General Sherman pithily summed up his experiences in combat.

  1. Subservient (adj.)

Meaning:  prepared to obey others unquestioningly. (अधीन)

Synonyms: submissive, deferential, acquiescent

Antonyms: disrespectful, impolite, impudent

Sentence: She was subservient to her parents.

  1. Pontificating (verb)

Meaning: express one’s opinions in a way considered annoyingly pompous and dogmatic. (व्याख्या करना)

Synonyms: expound, declaim, preach

Antonyms: humble, lowly, modest

Sentence: Politicians like to pontificate about falling standards.
