The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  17th February 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Iridescent (adj.)

Meaning: showing luminous colors that seem to change when seen from different angles. (रंग-बिरंग)

Synonyms: shimmery, glittering, colorful

Sentence: Her latest fashion collection features shimmering iridescent materials.

  1. Resuscitated (verb)

Meaning: revive (someone) from unconsciousness or apparent death. (पुनर्जीवित)

Synonyms: bring back, revived, refreshed

Antonyms: deadened, enervated

Sentence: His heart had stopped, but the doctors successfully resuscitated him.

  1. Pestilent (adj.)

Meaning: likely to cause or capable of causing death (विनाशक)

Synonyms: lethal, deadly, harmful

Antonyms: salubrious, beneficial, salutary

Sentence: Smallpox is a pestilent disease.

  1. Perversity (noun)

Meaning: a deliberate desire to behave in an unreasonable or unacceptable way; contrariness. (प्रतिकूलता)

Synonyms: contrariness, perverseness, awkwardness

Antonyms: understanding, tolerance, patience

Sentence: They responded with typical perversity.

  1. Fie (Exclamation)

Meaning: used to express disgust or outrage. (धिक!)

Synonyms: yuk, ugh

Sentence: fie on anyone who disagrees!

  1. Corpus (noun)

Meaning: a collection of written texts, especially the entire works of a particular author or a body of writing on a particular subject. (संग्रह)

Synonyms: collection, compilation, body

Sentence: I’ve got the corpus of Shakespeare’s works.

  1. Fait accompli (noun)

Meaning: a thing that has already happened or been decided before those affected hear about it, leaving them with no option but to accept it. (किया हुआ बात)

Sentence: The results were presented to shareholders as a fait accompli.

  1. Boomeranged (verb)

Meaning: (of a plan or action) return to the originator, often with negative consequences. (प्रतिक्षेप)

Synonyms: reverse, rebound, backfired

Antonyms: succeeded, flourished

Sentence: The plan boomeranged when they were trapped instead of their victim.

  1. Argot (noun)

Meaning: the jargon or slang of a particular group or class. (कठबोली)

Synonyms: jargon, slang, idiom

Antonyms: silence, quiet

Sentence: Pupils’ argot is of particular interest.

  1. Sententious (adj.)

Meaning: given to moralizing in a pompous or affected manner. (उपदेशात्मक)

Synonyms: moralistic, moralizing, sanctimonious

Sentence: The document was sententious and pompous.
