The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  17th March 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Obsequious (adj.)

Meaning: obedient or attentive to an excessive or servile degree. (चापलूस)

Synonyms: servile, ingratiating, unctuous

Antonyms: insurgent, mutinous, mulish

Sentence: The salesman’s obsequious manner was beginning to irritate me.

  1. Absurdity (noun)

Meaning: the quality or state of being ridiculous or wildly unreasonable. (मूर्खता)

Synonyms: preposterousness, ridiculousness, ludicrousness

Antonyms: prudence, sagacity, wisdom

Sentence: The absurdity of the situation made everyone laugh.

  1. Linger (verb)

Meaning: stay in a place longer than necessary because of a reluctance to leave. (दीर्घ काल तक रहना)

Synonyms: wait around, stay, remain

Sentence: Unfortunately, the tax will linger until April.

  1. Poignant (adj.)

Meaning: evoking a keen sense of sadness or regret. (मार्मिक)

Synonyms: touching, pitiful, sad

Antonyms: unaffecting, unemotional, unimpressive

Sentence: I found his speech deeply poignant.

  1. Addendum (noun)

Meaning: an item of additional material, typically omissions, added at the end of a book or other publication. (परिशिष्ट)

Synonyms: appendix, codicil, postscript

Antonyms: introduction, preface, prologue

Sentence: I follow this letter with the addendum duly signed for your attention.

  1. Vainglorious (adj.)

Meaning: excessively proud of oneself or one’s achievements; overly vain. (गुमानी)

Synonyms: assured, biggety, complacent

Antonyms: egoless, humble, modest

Sentence: The vainglorious trainer spent more flexing his muscles than he did helping build his client’s.

  1. Humbug (noun)

Meaning: deceptive or false talk or behavior. (पाखण्ड)

Synonyms: hypocrisy, insincerity, dishonesty

Antonyms: original, genuine

Sentence: There were all the usual humbug and obligatory compliments from ministers.

  1. Sacked (verb)

Meaning: to let go from office, service, or employment (बर्खास्त)

Synonyms: dismissed, fired, discharged

Antonyms: employed, engaged, hired

Sentence: He was sacked for computer misuse.

  1. Unbosom (verb)

Meaning: disclose (one’s thoughts or secrets). (प्रकट करना)

Synonyms: disclose, discover, divulge

Antonyms: cloak, conceal, enshroud

Sentence: You’ll feel better if you unbosom your sorrows to me.

  1. Derange (verb)

Meaning: cause (someone) to become insane. (उन्मत्त कर देना)

Synonyms: demented, unhinge

Antonyms: relax, soothe, tranquilize

Sentence: Being stranded at night on a lonely road would derange anyone.
