 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Intrepid (adj.)

Meaning: feeling or displaying no fear by temperament (निडर)

Synonyms: courageous, brave, fearless

Antonyms: timorous, timid, fearful

Sentence: An intrepid explorer who probed parts of the rain forest never previously attempted.

  1. Emissary (noun)

Meaning: a person sent on a mission to represent another (दूत)

Synonyms: ambassador, envoy, representative

Sentence: He had been engaged in emissary activity before he was discovered.

  1. Aplomb (noun)

Meaning: evenness of emotions or temper (आत्मविश्वास)

Synonyms: composure, sangfroid, calmness

Antonyms: agitation, concern, perturbation

Sentence: He delivered the speech with his usual aplomb.

  1. Exhort (verb)

Meaning: to try to persuade (someone) through earnest appeals to follow a course of action (प्रोत्साहित करना)

Synonyms: urge, encourage, nudge

Antonyms: discourage, deter, check

Sentence: The essay exhorts women to cast off their servitude to husbands and priests.

  1. Convalesce (verb)

Meaning: to become healthy and strong again after illness or weakness (ठीक होना)

Synonyms: recover, recuperate, heal

Antonyms: decline, collapse, fail

Sentence: She went to the seaside to convalesce after her stay in hospital.

  1. Smite (verb)

Meaning: to deliver a blow to (someone or something) usually in a strong vigorous manner (मारना)

Synonyms: smack, hit, slap

Sentence: He smote the ball into the grandstand.

  1. Scrutinize (verb)

Meaning: to look over closely (as for judging quality or condition) (जाँचना करना)

Synonyms: examine, review, scan

Antonyms: skim, miss, glance (at or over)

Sentence: The project’s time constraints make it impossible for the programmers to scrutinize every line of code, so some bugs should be expected.

  1. Exigent (adj.)

Meaning: needing immediate attention (अत्यावश्यक)

Synonyms: urgent, acute, dire

Antonyms: minor, incidental, trivial

Sentence: So, it is an important and exigent problem to estimate the software project size.

  1. Shovel (verb)

Meaning: to hollow out or form (something) by removing earth (खोदना)

Synonyms: dig, excavate, dredge

Antonyms: fill (in), smooth

Sentence: She dug the foundation with a pick and shovel.

  1. Genial (adj.)

Meaning: having an easygoing and pleasing manner especially in social situations (मिलनसार)

Synonyms: gracious, pleasant, nice

Antonyms: disagreeable, unpleasant, ungracious

Sentence: A genial host who makes a point of speaking personally to every guest.
