‘Vocabulary’
- Certainty (noun)
Meaning: firm conviction that something is the case. (यक़ीन)
Synonyms: confidence, sureness, positiveness
Antonyms: doubt, incertitude, nonconfidence
Sentence: She knew with absolute certainty that he’d say no.
- Recidivist (noun)
Meaning: formal a person who continues to commit crimes even after being caught and punished (मुजरिम)
Synonyms: criminal, culprit, lawbreaker
Antonyms: lawman, lawful
Sentence: Six prisoners are still at large along with four dangerous recidivists.
- Voluble (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person) talking fluently, readily, or incessantly. (बातूनी)
Synonyms: talkative, verbose, garrulous
Antonyms: silent, speechless, quiet
Sentence: Clarissa was extremely voluble on the subject of good manners.
- Contumacy (noun)
Meaning: a stubborn refusal to obey or comply with authority, especially a court order or summons. (आज्ञा का उल्लंघन)
Synonyms: contrariness, defiance, disobedience
Antonyms: compliance, obedience, submission
Sentence: Most of the unsuccessful men have the characteristics of contumacy and haughty.
- Rogue (adj.)
Meaning: a dishonest or unprincipled man. (दुष्ट)
Synonyms: scoundrel, evil, reprobate
Antonyms: honest, decent, ethical
Sentence: Mr. Ward wasn’t a rogue at all.
- Embezzle (verb)
Meaning: steal or misappropriate (money placed in one’s trust or belonging to the organization for which one works). (हड़प लेना)
Synonyms: steal, rob, pilfer
Sentence: He embezzled thousands of dollars from the charity.
- Dilettante (noun)
Meaning: a person who cultivates an area of interest, such as the arts, without real commitment or knowledge. (शौक़ीन)
Synonyms: dabbler, trifler, tinkerer
Sentence: I’m too serious to be a dilettante and too much a dabbler to be a professional.
- Squalid (adj.)
Meaning: (of a place) extremely dirty and unpleasant, especially as a result of poverty or neglect. (मैला)
Synonyms: dirty, filthy, grubby
Antonyms: cleaned, cleansed, tidy
Sentence: They lived in a squalid hovel for the next five years.
- Bellicose (adj.)
Meaning: demonstrating aggression and willingness to fight. (लड़ाकू)
Synonyms: belligerent, aggressive, hostile
Antonyms: nonaggressive, nonbelligerent, pacific
Sentence: The general made some bellicose statements about his country’s military strength.
- Vexatious (adj.)
Meaning: causing or tending to cause annoyance, frustration, or worry. (अफ़सोसनाक)
Synonyms: annoying, vexing, irritating
Antonyms: delightful, pleasing
Sentence: Those vexatious phone calls from telemarketers during the dinner hour.
