The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  18th October 2021

‘Vocabulary’

  1. Unfailing (adj.)

Meaning: without error or fault. (अमोघ)

Synonyms: errorless, faultless, flawless

Antonyms: fallible, defective, faulty

Sentence: I’d like to thank you all for your unfailing support.

  1. Globetrotting (noun)

Meaning: the action of traveling widely around the world. (विश्वयात्रा)

Synonyms: voyage, travel

Sentence: The Prime Minister’s globetrotting has led to accusations that he is ignoring domestic problems.

  1. Diabolical (adj.)

Meaning: characteristic of the Devil, or so evil as to be suggestive of the Devil. (पैशाचिक)

Synonyms: devilish, diabolic, fiendish

Antonyms: ethical, good, moral

Sentence: Conditions in the prison were diabolical.

  1. Putrefy (verb)

Meaning: (of a body or other organic matter) decay or rot and produce a fetid smell. (सड़ना)

Synonyms: decay, rot, decompose

Antonyms: develop, grow, mature

Sentence: The body was beginning to putrefy.

  1. Traduce (verb)

Meaning: speak badly of or tell lies about (someone) so as to damage their reputation. (बदनाम करना)

Synonyms: defame, slander, malign

Antonyms: glorify, honor, acclaim

Sentence: He traduced his friend’s character.

  1. Exhilarate (verb)

Meaning: make (someone) feel very happy, animated, or elated. (ख़ुश करना)

Synonyms: thrill, excite, intoxicate

Antonyms: distress, demoralize, sadden

Sentence: The cold weather exhilarated the walkers.

  1. Denouement (noun)

Meaning: the final part of a play, movie, or narrative in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved. (उपसंहार)

Synonyms: final act, climax, epilogue

Antonyms: beginning, start

Sentence: The film’s denouement was unsatisfying and ambiguous.

  1. Obviate (verb)

Meaning: remove (a need or difficulty). (मुक्त हो जाना)

Synonyms: preclude, prevent, remove

Sentence: A peaceful solution would obviate the need to send a UN military force.

  1. Dissonant (adj.)

Meaning: lacking harmony. (कर्कश)

Synonyms: inharmonious, disharmonious, discordant

Antonyms: harmonious, melodious, harmonizing

Sentence: A lot of harsh, dissonant music has been composed in the last 40 years.

  1. Persecute (verb)

Meaning: subject (someone) to hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of their race or political or religious beliefs. (सताना)

Synonyms: oppress, abuse, victimize

Antonyms: comfort, console, assist

Sentence: His followers were persecuted by the authorities.
