The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  19th August 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Grouse (verb)

Meaning: complaint pettily; grumble. (बड़बड़ाना)

Synonyms: grumble, complain, moan

Antonyms: commendation, compliment, plaudit

Sentence: She heard him grousing about his assistant.

  1. Echelon (noun)

Meaning: a level or rank in an organization, a profession, or society. (टोली)

Synonyms: level, rank, grade

Sentence: Officers were drawn largely from the top echelons of society.

  1. Delinquent (noun)

Meaning: (typically of a young person or that person’s behavior) showing or characterized by a tendency to commit a crime, mainly minor crime. (अपराधी)

Synonyms: lawless, lawbreaking, criminal

Antonyms: saint

Sentence: Most delinquents have deprived backgrounds.

  1. Deference (noun)

Meaning: humble submission and respect. (सम्मान)

Synonyms: respect, regard, esteem

Antonyms: defiance, disobedience, intractability

Sentence: He treats her with such deference.

  1. Brandishing (verb)

Meaning: to put into view in a threatening or excited manner (दिखाते)

Synonyms: flourishing, waving, displaying

Antonyms: concealing, covering, hiding

Sentence: The horseman came up to Robin Hood, brandishing his sword.

  1. Indescribable (adj.)

Meaning: too unusual, extreme, or indefinite to be adequately described. (अवर्णनीय)

Synonyms: inexpressible, undefinable, inenarrable

Antonyms: definable, expressible

Sentence: The chaos and confusion were indescribable.

  1. Littorals (noun)

Meaning: a region lying along a shore. (समुद्र तट)

Synonyms: coastlands, seaside, banks

Sentence: The tea plant thrives and is being planted relatively rapidly on the Black Sea littoral in Transcaucasia

  1. Compel (verb)

Meaning: force or oblige (someone) to do something. (मजबूर)

Synonyms: force, coerce into, pressurize into

Antonyms: allow, let, permit

Sentence: The law will compel employers to provide health insurance.

  1. Ingenuity (adj.)

Meaning: the quality of being clever, original, and inventive. (सरलता)

Synonyms: inventiveness, creativity, imagination

Antonyms: dryness, dullness

Sentence: We are looking for someone with ingenuity and imagination.

  1. Chasm (noun)

Meaning: a deep fissure in the earth, rock, or another surface. (खाई)

Synonyms: abysm, abyss, deep

Sentence: A huge chasm gaped before them.
