 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Disdainful (adj.)

Meaning: showing contempt or lack of respect. (घृणा-युक्त)

Synonyms: contemptuous, scornful, derisive

Antonyms: admiring, applauding, appreciative

Sentence: With a last disdainful look, she turned toward the door.

  1. Braggart (noun)

Meaning: a person who boasts about achievements or possessions. (शेख़ीबाज़ मनुष्य)

Synonyms: boaster, brag, bragger

Antonyms: humble, modest, uncomplacent

Sentence: A braggart who was always talking about how much money he made.

  1. Conduit (noun)

Meaning: a channel for conveying water or other fluid. (पाइपलाइन)

Synonyms: channel, duct, pipe

Sentence: This is the major conduit for carrying water to the military base.

  1. Ambushed (verb)

Meaning: make a surprise attack on (someone) from a concealed position. (घात लगाकर हमला किया)

Synonyms: attack by surprise, trap, entrap

Sentence: The king’s enemies planned to ambush the royal coach on the way to Paris and capture the king.

  1. Infidel (noun)

Meaning: a person who does not believe in religion or who adheres to a religion other than one’s own. (नास्तिक)

Synonyms: nonbeliever, heathen, pagan

Antonyms: believer, conformer, conformist

Sentence: They wanted to secure the Holy Places from the infidel.

  1. Seclusion (noun)

Meaning: the state of being private and away from other people. (एकांत)

Synonyms: isolation, solitude, retreat

Antonyms: companionship, company, comradeship

Sentence: I live very much in seclusion these days.

  1. Proficient (adj.)

Meaning: competent or skilled in doing or using something. (प्रवीण)

Synonyms: skilled, skillful, expert

Antonyms: amateur, inexperienced, inexpert

Sentence: With practice, you should become proficient within six months.

  1. Bulwark (noun)

Meaning: a defensive wall. (बांध)

Synonyms: wall, rampart, fortification

Sentence: Our people’s support is a bulwark against the enemy.

  1. Defied (verb)

Meaning: openly resist or refuse to obey. (अवहेलना करना)

Synonyms: resist, withstand, confront

Antonyms: complied (with), conformed (to), followed

Sentence: I wouldn’t have dared to defy my teachers.

  1. Thumping (adv.)

Meaning: to a great degree (अति)

Synonyms: achingly, almighty, archly

Antonyms: little, negligibly, nominally

Sentence: He wrote several thumping big books on World War II.
