 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Accentuate (verb)

Meaning: make more noticeable or prominent. (ध्यान आकर्षित करना)

Synonyms: focus attention on, draw attention to, highlight

Antonyms: underemphasize, understate, belittle

Sentence: The photograph seemed to accentuate his large nose.

  1. Insidious (adj.)

Meaning: proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects. (कपटी)

Synonyms: stealthy, subtle, surreptitious

Antonyms: clarifying, elucidative, explanatory

Sentence: High blood pressure is an insidious condition that has few symptoms.

  1. Amenable (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) open and responsive to suggestion; easily persuaded or controlled. (वश्य)

Synonyms: compliant, acquiescent, biddable

Antonyms: disinclined, unamenable, unwilling

Sentence: I find him amenable to argument.

  1. Unflinching (adj.)

Meaning: not showing fear or hesitation in the face of danger or difficulty. (बेहिचक)

Synonyms: resolute, determined, single-minded

Antonyms: slackening, impotent, invertebrate

Sentence: He has shown unflinching determination throughout the campaign.

  1. Intermittent (adj.)

Meaning: occurring at irregular intervals; not continuous or steady. (रुक-रुक कर)

Synonyms: sporadic, irregular, fitful

Antonyms: constant, continuous, incessant

Sentence: After three hours of intermittent rain, the game was abandoned.

  1. Statute (noun)

Meaning: a written law passed by a legislative body. (क़ानून)

Synonyms: law, regulation, enactment

Sentence: Protection for the consumer is laid down by statute.

  1. Falter (verb)

Meaning: start to lose strength or momentum. (डगमगाना)

Synonyms: hesitate, fluctuate, waver

Sentence: The economy is beginning to falter.

  1. Malignant (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing a desire to cause someone pain or suffering for the sheer enjoyment of it (घातक)

Synonyms: spiteful, hostile, malevolent

Antonyms: benevolent, benign, benignant

Sentence: The process by which malignant cancer cells multiply isn’t fully understood.

  1. Evanescent (adj.)

Meaning: soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing. (क्षणभंगुर)

Synonyms: vanishing, fading, fleeting

Antonyms: endless, eternal, everlasting

Sentence: Talk is evanescent but the writing leaves footprints.

  1. Smoldered (verb)

Meaning: burn slowly with smoke but no flame. (सुलगना)

Synonyms: burn slowly, blazed, glow

Antonyms: extinguished, darkened, dimmed

Sentence: The bonfire still smoldered, the smoke drifting over the paddock.
