‘Vocabulary’
- Injunction (noun)
Meaning: an authoritative warning or order. (निषेधाज्ञा)
Synonyms: order, decree, edict
Sentence: They have obtained an injunction restraining the company from selling the product.
- Bumptious (adj.)
Meaning: self-assertive or proud to an irritating degree. (ख़ुद-एतमाद)
Synonyms: self-important, conceited, arrogant
Antonyms: humble, modest, unarrogant
Sentence: She was clearly embarrassed at times by Durkin’s bumptious behaviour.
- Imprimatur (noun)
Meaning: an acceptance of something as satisfactory (इजाज़त)
Synonyms: approbation, approval, acceptation
Antonyms: disapprobation, disapproval, disfavor
Sentence: They can also get the imprimatur of the Constitutional Court to achieve this.
- Surly (adj.)
Meaning: bad-tempered and unfriendly. (असभ्य)
Synonyms: bad-tempered, ill-natured, grumpy
Antonyms: amiable, good-humored, good-natured
Sentence: We were served by a very surly waiter.
- Tinderbox (noun)
Meaning: a potentially explosive place or situation (हिंसक स्थिति)
Synonyms: violent, volcanic, ferocious
Antonyms: nonviolent, peaceful, peaceable
Sentence: It was clearly a tinderbox situation with demonstrators likely to become violent at any moment.
6. Refractory (adj.)
Meaning: stubborn or unmanageable. (जिद्दी)
Synonyms: obstinate, stubborn, intransigent
Antonyms: flexible, obedient, docile
Sentence: The more Sarah nagged her, the more refractory Cissie became.
- Bonhomie (noun)
Meaning: cheerful friendliness; geniality. (खुशमिज़ाजी)
Synonyms: geniality, congeniality, conviviality
Antonyms: animosity, antagonism, antipathy
Sentence: He was full of bonhomie.
- Revile (verb)
Meaning: criticize in an abusive or angrily insulting manner. (बुरा-भला कहना)
Synonyms: criticize, censure, condemn
Antonyms: acclaim, applaud, commend
Sentence: They feared that he would revile them if they displeased him.
- Propitiate (verb)
Meaning: to lessen the anger or agitation of (शांत करना)
Synonyms: appease, placate, conciliate
Antonyms: anger, antagonize, infuriate
Sentence: Amendments have been added to propitiate local pressure groups.
- Confide (verb)
Meaning: tell someone about a secret or private matter while trusting them not to repeat it to others. (गुप्त बात कहना)
Synonyms: reveal, disclose, divulge
Antonyms: hold, retain
Sentence: Why didn’t you confide the secret to me?
