‘Vocabulary’

  1. Avalanche (noun)

Meaning: a mass of snow, ice, and rocks falling rapidly down a mountainside. (बर्फ गिरना)

Synonyms: snowslide, snow slip, icefall

Antonyms: dribble, drip

Sentence: He was swept to his death by an avalanche in 1988.

  1. Hoax (noun)

Meaning: a humorous or malicious deception. (छल)

Synonyms: jest, prank, trick

Antonyms: original, honest

Sentence: They recognized the plan as a hoax.

  1. Abdicate (verb)

Meaning: (of a monarch) renounce one’s throne. (त्यागना)

Synonyms: resign, retire, quit

Antonyms: claim, take over, wrest

Sentence: In 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated as German emperor.

  1. Truncate (verb)

Meaning: shorten the duration or extent of. (काट-छांट)

Synonyms: shorten, trim, cut short

Antonyms: enlarge, expand, amplify

Sentence: My article was published in truncated form.

  1. Coercions (noun)

Meaning: the practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats. (जबरदस्ती)

Synonyms: force, compulsion, oppression

Antonyms: approvals, consents, permissions

Sentence: Our problem cannot be solved by any form of coercion but only by agreement.

  1. Thrash (verb)

Meaning: beat (a person or animal) repeatedly and violently with a stick or whip. (पीटना)

Synonyms: hit, beat, flog

Antonyms: cheer, praise, protect

Sentence: He threatened to thrash the life out of me.

  1. Incumbent (adj.)

Meaning: necessary for (someone) as a duty or responsibility. (निर्भर)

Synonyms: binding, obligatory, mandatory

Antonyms: elective, optional, voluntary

Sentence: It is incumbent on all decent people to concentrate on destroying the evil.

  1. Hover (verb)

Meaning: remain in one place in the air. (मंडराना)

Synonyms: flutter, float, hang

Antonyms: settle, sink, immerse

Sentence: Army helicopters hovered overhead.

  1. Chicanery (noun)

Meaning: the use of trickery to achieve a political, financial, or legal purpose. (झूठा इलज़ाम)

Synonyms: trickery, deception, deceit

Antonyms: artlessness, forthrightness, guilelessness

Sentence: If this were to actually come to pass, it could open the door to all sorts of chicanery.

  1. Chic (adj.)

Meaning: elegantly and stylishly fashionable. (ठाठ)

Synonyms: stylish, smart, elegant

Antonyms: uncool, unfashionable, unstylish

Sentence: She bought a chic little hat.
