The Hindu Editorial VOCAB: 1st March 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. looming (verb)

Meaning: appear as a shadowy form, especially one that is large or threatening. (उभरते)

Synonyms: emerge, appear

Antonyms: abating, declining

Sentence: Rain clouds were looming on the horizon.

  1. Sludge (noun)

Meaning: thick, soft, wet mud or a similar viscous mixture of liquid and solid components, especially the product of an industrial or refining process. (कीचड़)

Synonyms: mud, muck, mire

Sentence: All dumping of sludge will be banned by 1998.

  1. Felicitate (verb)

Meaning: to express to (someone) admiration for his or her success or good fortune (अभिनंदन करना)

Synonyms: compliment, congratulate, applaud

Antonyms: cry down, decry, deprecate

  1. Lacerate (verb)

Meaning: tear or make deep cuts in (flesh or skin). (फाड़ना)

Synonyms: slash, tear, rip

Sentence: The broken glass lacerated his feet.

  1. Statute (noun)

Meaning: a written law passed by a legislative body. (क़ानून)

Synonyms: law, regulation, enactment

Sentence: Protection for the consumer is laid down by statute.

  1. Unenviable (adj.)

Meaning: difficult, undesirable, or unpleasant. (अवांछनीय)

Synonyms: disagreeable, unpleasant, undesirable

Antonyms: charming, enchanting, fascinating

Sentence: Cooper had the unenviable job of announcing the redundancies.

  1. Subtlety (noun)

Meaning: the quality or state of being subtle. (सूक्ष्मता)

Synonyms: delicacy, delicateness, subtleness

Sentence: He argued his case with considerable subtlety.

  1. Amnesty (noun)

Meaning: an official pardon for people who have been convicted of political offenses. (आम माफ़ी)

Synonyms: pardon, pardoning. reprieve

Antonyms: penalty, punishment, retribution

Sentence: The government granted an amnesty to all political prisoners.

  1. Fomented (verb)

Meaning: instigate or stir up (an undesirable or violent sentiment or course of action). (भड़काना)

Synonyms: instigate, incite, provoke

Antonyms: allay, calm, settle

Sentence: They accused him of fomenting political unrest.

  1. Ominous (adj.)

Meaning: giving the impression that something bad or unpleasant is going to happen; threatening; inauspicious. (अमंगल)

Synonyms: threatening, menacing, baleful

Antonyms: unthreatening, auspicious, benign

Sentence: There was an ominous silence at the other end of the phone.
