The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  1st November 2025

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Repose (noun)

Meaning: a state of rest, sleep, or tranquility. (विश्राम)

Synonyms: rest, relaxation, inactivity

Antonyms: exertion, labor, toil

Sentence: The doctor ordered a period of repose for the patient recovering from pneumonia.

  1. Tumble (verb)

Meaning: (typically of a person) fall suddenly, clumsily, or headlong. (लुढ़क)

Synonyms: fall (over), fall down, topple over

Antonyms: get up, rise, stand (up)

Sentence: Children tumble over each other in play.

  1. Jeopardized (verb)

Meaning: put (someone or something) into a situation in which there is a danger of loss, harm, or failure. (ख़तरे में डालना)

Synonyms: threaten, endanger, imperil

Antonyms: guarded, protected, sheltered

Sentence: He jeopardized his life to save the drowning child.

  1. Culpability (noun)

Meaning: responsibility for a fault or wrong; blame. (दोषी)

Synonyms: guilt, blame, fault

Antonyms: blamelessness, guiltlessness, innocence

Sentence: After the accident, the company refused to accept culpability.

  1. Sludge (noun)

Meaning: thick, soft, wet mud or a similar viscous mixture of liquid and solid components, especially the product of an industrial or refining process. (कीचड़)

Synonyms: mud, muck, mire

Sentence: All dumping of sludge will be banned by 1998.

  1. Floundering (verb)

Meaning: struggle or stagger helplessly or clumsily in water or mud. (लड़खड़ाना)

Synonyms: barging, clumping, flogging

Antonyms: coasting, gliding, sliding

Sentence: People were floundering about in the water, shouting and screaming.

  1. Subversive (adj.)

Meaning: seeking or intended to subvert an established system or institution. (विनाशक)

Synonyms: disruptive, troublemaking, inflammatory

Antonyms: liberal, progressive

Sentence: A subversive organization determined to unseat a leader who they believed operated outside the law.

  1. Entwine (verb)

Meaning: wind or twist together; interweave. (गुथना)

Synonyms: wind around, twist around, coil around

Antonyms: disentangle, uncoil, entwine

Sentence: All these threads, and more, entwine in the lines of longitude.

  1. Queasy (adj.)

Meaning: nauseated; feeling sick. (रोगी)

Synonyms: nauseous, nauseated, bilious

Antonyms: healthy, well

Sentence: The youngster felt a little queasy after eating too much Easter candy.

  1. Depraved (adj.)

Meaning: morally corrupt; wicked. (भ्रष्ट)

Synonyms: corrupted, perverted, deviant

Antonyms: virtuous, uncorrupted, honest

Sentence: He thought we were all depraved gamblers.
