The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  20th April 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Morbidity (noun)

Meaning: the condition of suffering from a disease or medical condition. (रोग)

Synonyms: illness, sickness, macabre

Sentence: The therapy can substantially reduce respiratory morbidity in infants.

  1. Extradite (verb)

Meaning: hand over (a person accused or convicted of a crime) to the jurisdiction of the foreign state in which the crime was committed. (अपराधी देना)

Synonyms: deport, hand over, send back

Sentence: The police have refused to extradite a man wanted for a bank robbery in France.

  1. Sequestered (adj.)

Meaning: (of a place) isolated and hidden away. (एकान्त)

Synonyms: secluded, cloistered, hidden away

Antonyms: desegregate, integrate, assimilate

Sentence: I found a sequestered spot at the bottom of the garden and lay down with my book.

  1. Grudge (noun)

Meaning: a persistent feeling of ill will or resentment resulting from a past insult or injury. (ईर्ष्या)

Synonyms: grievance, resentment, bitterness

Antonyms: goodwill, amiability, civility

Sentence: There’s been a grudge between the two families for years.

  1. Recessed (verb)

Meaning: to bring to a formal close for a period of time (स्थगित)

Synonyms: adjourned, prorogued, suspended

Antonyms: inaugurated, launched, opened

Sentence: The judge recessed the court for lunch.

  1. Startled (adj.)

Meaning: feeling or showing sudden shock or alarm. (चौंका)

Synonyms: surprised, amazed, astonished

Antonyms: disinterested, incurious

Sentence: She was momentarily startled by the sight before her.

  1. Drench (verb)

Meaning: wet thoroughly; soak. (भिगाना)

Synonyms: soak, saturate, wet through

Antonyms: desiccate, dry, parch

Sentence: We were drenched by the sudden rainstorm.

  1. Endurance (noun)

Meaning: the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way. (धैर्य)

Synonyms: toleration, bearing, sufferance

Antonyms: cessation, end

Sentence: She showed great endurance in the face of pain.

  1. Naught (noun)

Meaning: the numerical symbol 0 or the absence of number or quantity represented by it (शून्य)

Synonyms: nil, nothing, zero

Sentence: He’s naught but a worthless fool.

  1. Formidable (adj.)

Meaning: inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large, powerful, intense, or capable. (दुर्जेय)

Synonyms: intimidating, forbidding, redoubtable

Antonyms: calming, comforting, consoling

Sentence: No government can be long secure without a formidable opposition.
