 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Melancholy (adj.)

Meaning: causing unhappiness (उदासी)

Synonyms: sad, depressing, mournful

Antonyms: happy, cheery, glad

Sentence: The melancholy thought of having to say good-bye to all the friends he had made over the summer.

  1. Arcane (adj.)

Meaning: difficult for one of ordinary knowledge or intelligence to understand (रहस्यमय)

Synonyms: esoteric, profound, recondite

Antonyms: superficial, simple, shallow

Sentence: This argument may seem arcane to those not closely involved in the world of finance.

  1. Taverns (noun)

Meaning: a place that provides rooms and usually a public dining room for overnight guests (सराय)

Synonyms: hotels, hostels, motels

Sentence: Gainsborough has 44 hotels, inns, and taverns, 9 beer houses, and 4 eating and boarding houses.

  1. Eager (adj.)

Meaning: showing urgent desire or interest (उत्सुक)

Synonyms: excited, avid, enthusiastic

Antonyms: indifferent, apathetic, unenthusiastic

Sentence: Tom was eager to try out his new pair of skis.

  1. Nuisance (noun)

Meaning: one who is obnoxiously annoying (उपद्रवी)

Synonyms: tease, pest, annoyer

Antonyms: charmer, smoothie, comforter

Sentence: The dogs next door is a real nuisance.

  1. Veracious (adj.)

Meaning: being in the habit of telling the truth (सत्यप्रिय)

Synonyms: honest, outspoken, truthful

Antonyms: dishonest, false, untruthful

Sentence: He has a reputation for being veracious, so people generally take his word for things.

  1. Vaticinate (Verb)

Meaning: to tell of or describe beforehand (भविष्यवाणी करना)

Synonyms: predict, forecast, anticipate

Antonyms: describe, report, relate

Sentence: He vaticinated a period of peace for the continent.

  1. Aficionados (noun)

Meaning: a person with a strong and habitual liking for something (प्रशंसक)

Synonyms: enthusiasts, fans, lovers

Antonyms: nonfans, detractors, critics

Sentence: This coffee is regarded by aficionados as one of the world’s finest.

  1. Acme (noun)

Meaning: the highest part or point (शिखर)

Synonyms: pinnacle, zenith, height

Antonyms: bottom, foot, base

Sentence: His work is considered the acme of cinematic art.

  1. Janitor (noun)

Meaning: a person who takes care of a property sometimes for an absent owner (चौकीदार)

Synonyms: custodian, caretaker, keeper

Sentence: Got a job as the night janitor at the elementary school.
