 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Menace (noun)

Meaning: Something that may cause injury or harm. (खतरा)

Synonyms: threat, danger, risk

Antonyms: protection, guard, ward

Sentence: A loaded gun is a menace that this household doesn’t need.

  1. Garrulous (adj.)

Meaning: Fond of talking or conversation. (बातूनी)

Synonyms: talkative, outspoken, chatty

Antonyms: silent, shy, quiet

Sentence: Lan isn’t normally this garrulous!

  1. Discretion (noun)

Meaning: The ability to make intelligent decisions, especially in everyday matters. (विवेक)

Synonyms: prudence, wisdom, intelligence

Antonyms: stupidity, foolishness, idiocy

Sentence: We’ll rely on your discretion in handling this accusation of cheating.

  1. Assail (verb)

Meaning: make a concerted or violent attack on. (आक्रमण करना)

Synonyms: attack, assault, rush

Antonyms: defend, guard, protect

Sentence: The Scots army assailed Edward’s army from the rear.

  1. Prestidigitation (noun)

Meaning: The art or skill of performing tricks or illusions for entertainment. (प्रतिष्ठा)

Synonyms: magic, deception, legerdemain

Sentence: Magic can be a lifetime hobby and card magic is the poetry of prestidigitation.

  1. Eloquent (adj.)

Meaning: fluent or persuasive in speaking or writing. (सुवक्ता)

Synonyms: persuasive, expressive, articulate

Antonyms: inarticulate, ineloquent, unvocal

Sentence: His speeches in the chamber were always eloquent and powerful.

  1. Peckish (adj.)

Meaning: Feeling a desire or need for food. (भूखा)

Synonyms: hungry, starving, starved

Antonyms: full, overfull, overstuffed

Sentence: If you’re feeling peckish at 10pm, have a small snack.

  1. Jibed (verb)

Meaning: To be in agreement on every point. (माना)

Synonyms: coincided, corresponded, agreed

Antonyms: disputed, nullified, clashed

Sentence: She jibed constantly at the way he ran his business.

  1. Breezy (adj.)

Meaning: Having a relaxed, casual manner. (सहज)

Synonyms: casual, mellow, nonchalant

Antonyms: formal, uptight, rigid

Sentence: Mona tried to sound breezy.

  1. Wane (verb)

Meaning: To grow less in scope or intensity especially gradually. (कम होना)

Synonyms: subside, diminish, decrease

Antonyms: rise, grow, increase

Sentence: While his interest in these sports began to wane, a passion for rugby developed.
