The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  21st February 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Cognoscente (noun)

Meaning: a connoisseur; a discerning expert. (विशेषज्ञ)

Synonyms: scholar, connoisseur, maestro

Antonyms: novice, amateur, neophyte

Sentence: He is a cognoscenti of medieval painting.

  1. Indomitable (adj.)

Meaning: impossible to subdue or defeat. (अदम्य)

Synonyms: invincible, unconquerable, unbeatable

Antonyms: vulnerable, susceptible, vincible

Sentence: Alice was a woman of indomitable spirit.

  1. Unremitting (adj.)

Meaning: going on and on without any interruptions (निरंतर)

Synonyms: continuous, relentless, incessant

Antonyms: recurrent, intermittent, discontinuous

Sentence: As long as the continuous efforts, unremitting struggle, there is no things that cannot be conquered.

  1. Drizzle (noun)

Meaning: light rain falling in very fine drops. (बूंदा बांदी)

Sentence: Boston will be cloudy with patchy drizzle.

  1. Nay (noun)

Meaning: a negative answer or vote. (अस्वीकार)

Synonyms: denial, refusal, negation

Antonyms: yes, positive, approval

  1. Contagion (noun)

Meaning: the communication of disease from one person to another by close contact. (संक्रमण)

Synonyms: malady, illness, infection

Meaning: cautiously or suspiciously reluctant to do something. (होशियार)

Synonyms: wary, cautious, heedful

Antonyms: careless, unmindful, heedless

Meaning: a number of different things or parts that are put or grouped together to form a whole but remain distinct entities. (संगुटिका)

Meaning: having or showing a great desire to possess something belonging to someone else. (लालची)

  1. Corroborate (verb)

Meaning: confirm or give support to (a statement, theory, or finding). (पुष्टि करना)

Synonyms: confirm, verify, endorse

Antonyms: refute, disprove, rebut

Sentence: Recent research seems to corroborate his theory.
