 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Germane (adj.)

Meaning: Having to do with the matter at hand. (तथ्य)

Synonyms: relevant, applicable, pertinent

Antonyms: irrelevant, immaterial, inapplicable

Sentence: The fact is not germane to this issue.

  1. Perjure (verb)

Meaning: To commit perjury. (झूठ बोलना)

Synonyms: lie, fabricate, misrepresent

Antonyms: testify, assert, swear

Sentence: He perjured himself before the court by giving a false testimony.

  1. Acrimony (noun)

Meaning: Biting sharpness of feeling or expression. (तीखापन)

Synonyms: bitterness, hostility, severity

Antonyms: diplomacy, cordiality, civility

Sentence: She responded with such acrimony that he never brought the subject up again.

  1. Grandeur (noun)

Meaning: Impressiveness of beauty on a large scale. (भव्य)

Synonyms: majesty, brilliance, elegance

Sentence: The hotel had an air of faded grandeur.

  1. Tormentor (noun)

Meaning: A person who causes repeated emotional pain, distress, or annoyance to another. (सतानेवाला)

Synonyms: harasser, torturer, tease

Antonyms: protector, defender, guard

Sentence: The dog suddenly turned on its tormentors.

  1. Confound (verb)

Meaning: To throw into a state of mental uncertainty. (भ्रमित करना)

Synonyms: confuse, perplex, disturb

Antonyms: assure, satisfy, inform

Sentence: Confound that silly fool!

  1. Attune (verb)

Meaning: To bring to a state free of conflicts, inconsistencies, or differences. (अनुरूप रहना)

Synonyms: reconcile, coordinate, integrate

Antonyms: disrupt, disturb, upset

Sentence: A good nurse has to be attuned to the needs of his or her patients.

  1. Discretion (noun)

Meaning: The ability to make intelligent decisions especially in everyday matters. (विवेक)

Synonyms: prudence, sensibleness, intelligence

Antonyms: indiscretion, imprudence, shortsightedness

Sentence: we’ll rely on your discretion in handling this accusation of cheating

  1. Henchman (noun)

Meaning: A trusted follower or supporter who performs unpleasant, wrong, or illegal tasks for a powerful person. (गुर्गों)

Synonyms: follower, supporter, disciple

Antonyms: traitor, renegade, turncoat

Sentence: Like other dictators, he tried to distance himself from the dirty deeds carried out by his henchmen.

  1. Abstruse (adj.)

Meaning: Difficult for one of ordinary knowledge or intelligence to understand. (अव्यक्त)

Synonyms: esoteric, profound, recondite

Antonyms: superficial, shallow, simple

Sentence: You’re not the only one who finds Einstein’s theory of relativity abstruse.
