In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have the English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.
‘Vocabulary’
- Edifice (noun)
Meaning: a building, especially a large, imposing one. (भवन)
Synonyms: building, structure, construction
Sentence: The town hall is the only edifice surviving from the fifteenth century.
- Parlance (noun)
Meaning: a particular way of speaking or using words, especially a way common to those with a particular job or interest. (बोल-चाल)
Synonyms: jargon, language, phraseology
Sentence: In military parlance, this is known as a fast retreat.
- Hapless (adj.)
Meaning: (especially of a person) unfortunate. (बदकिस्मत)
Synonyms: unfortunate, unlucky, luckless
Antonyms: fortunate, happy, lucky
Sentence: All of them were hapless victims of this hurricane.
- Shellacking (noun)
Meaning: failure to win a contest (पराजित करना)
Synonyms: beating, defeat, drubbing
Antonyms: success, triumph, victory
Sentence: We gave their team a real shellacking.
- Howbeit (adv.)
Meaning: nevertheless; however. (परन्तु)
Synonyms: even so, however, nevertheless
Antonyms: all the same
Sentence: I’ve never written a poem before; howbeit, I feel my first attempt is quite good
- Caliginous (adj.)
Meaning: being without light or without much light (अंधेरा)
Synonyms: black, dark, darkened
Antonyms: bright, brightened, illuminated
Sentence: Without a flashlight, there was no way to tell what kind of creatures lurked in the caliginous cave.
- Esurient (adj.)
Meaning: having a huge appetite (लालची)
Synonyms: edacious, gluttonous, greedy
Antonyms: glutted, sated, satiated
Sentence: It would be silly to leave your esurient brother in charge of the three dozen cupcakes you baked for a birthday party.
- Dastardly (adj.)
Meaning: wicked and cruel. (नीचतापूर्ण)
Synonyms: wicked, evil, iniquitous
Antonyms: noble, praiseworthy
Sentence: He described the killing as a dastardly act.
- Stealthily (adv.)
Meaning: in a cautious and surreptitious manner, so as not to be seen or heard. (छिपकर)
Synonyms: furtively, secretively, sneakily
Antonyms: openly, publicly
Sentence: The thief stealthily stole into the house.
- Aver (verb)
Meaning: state or assert to be the case. (दृढ़ता से कहना)
Synonyms: declare, assert, state
Antonyms: deny, gainsay
Sentence: I aver that I have spoken the truth.
