 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Shudder (verb)

Meaning: (of a person) tremble convulsively, typically as a result of fear or revulsion. (थरथरना)

Synonyms: shiver, tremble, quiver

Sentence: I shuddered with horror.

  1. Parlous (adj.)

Meaning: full of danger or uncertainty; precarious. (जोखिमी)

Synonyms: dangerous, grievous, hazardous

Antonyms: harmless, innocent, innocuous

Sentence: Window washing can indeed be a parlous occupation on a skyscraper.

  1. Disparaged (verb)

Meaning: regard or represent as being of little worth. (अपमानित करना)

Synonyms: denigrate, deprecate, depreciate

Antonyms: acclaimed, applauded, exalted

Sentence: Her bad behavior has disparaged her whole family.

  1. Recessed (verb)

Meaning: to bring to a formal close for a period of time (स्थगित)

Synonyms: adjourned, prorogued, suspended

Antonyms: inaugurated, launched, opened

Sentence: The judge recessed the court for lunch.

  1. Vignette (noun)

Meaning: a vivid representation in words of someone or something (शब्दचित्र)

Synonyms: definition, delineation, depiction

Sentence: Each vignette represents one of the four seasons.

  1. Prodigious (adj.)

Meaning: remarkably or impressively great in extent, size, or degree. (अद्भुत)

Synonyms: enormous, colossal, immense

Antonyms: unimpressive, common, ordinary

Sentence: What a prodigious opportunity you have missed.

  1. Fleece (verb)

Meaning: obtain a great deal of money from (someone), typically by overcharging or swindling them. (फ़ायदा उठाना)

Synonyms: swindle, cheat, defraud

Sentence: Swindlers who use the telephone to fleece senior citizens out of their savings.

  1. Vamoose (verb)

Meaning: depart hurriedly. (जल्दी से निकल जाना)

Synonyms: depart, exit, walk out

Antonyms: arrive, come,

Sentence: We’d better vamoose before we’re caught.

  1. Redound (verb)

Meaning: contribute greatly to (a person’s credit or honor). (सहायता देना)

Synonyms: contribute to, result in, conduce to

Sentence: Her success will redound to the fame of University.

  1. Capitulate (verb)

Meaning: cease to resist an opponent or an unwelcome demand; surrender. (हथियार डाल देना)

Synonyms: surrender, give in, concede defeat

Antonyms: endure, stand

Sentence: The enemy was warned to capitulate or face annihilation.
