The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  21st June 2023

In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Cursory (adj.)

Meaning: hasty and therefore not thorough or detailed. (जल्दबाजी)

Synonyms: perfunctory, desultory, casual

Antonyms: deliberate, unhurried, unrushed

Sentence: He put aside the papers after a cursory study.

  1. Braving (verb)

Meaning: to oppose (something hostile or dangerous) with firmness or courage (सामना करना)

Synonyms: confronting, facing, encountering

Antonyms: avoiding, ducking, sidestepping

Sentence: He did not feel up to braving the journalists at the airport.

  1. Rigged (verb)

Meaning: to provide (someone) with what is needed for a task or activity (प्रस्तुत)

Synonyms: equipped, furnished, supplied

Antonyms: stripped, deprived, divested

Sentence: Our boat has been rigged up with new sails.

  1. Meritocracy (noun)

Meaning: government or the holding of power by people selected on the basis of their ability. (प्रतिभा के आधार पर चयन किया सरकार)

Synonyms: government, administration, regime

Sentence: However, in a meritocracy, those at the bottom are clearly inferior.

  1. Siphoned (verb)

Meaning: to remove (liquid) gradually or completely (बाहर निकाला)

Synonyms: pumped, drained, sucked

Antonyms: filled, soaked, watered

Sentence: The waste liquid needs to be siphoned off.

  1. Consensus (noun)

Meaning: a general agreement. (आम सहमति)

Synonyms: agreement, harmony, concord

Antonyms: conflict, disagreement, dissensus

Sentence: I want to get a new bike but I am not getting consensus from my family members.

  1. Finesse (noun)

Meaning: intricate and refined delicacy. (चालाकी)

Synonyms: skill, subtlety, expertise

Antonyms: inadequacy, incompetence, ineptitude

Sentence: He is a true believer, but sadly lacks finesse.

  1. Reclamation (noun)

Meaning: the process of claiming something back or of reasserting a right. (उद्धार)

Synonyms: recovery, recapture, retrieval

Antonyms: loss, misplacement

Sentence: Pumped water out of the field as part of the land reclamation program designed to provide farmers with more farmland.

  1. Puritanical (adj.)

Meaning: practicing or affecting strict religious or moral behavior. (सख़्त)

Synonyms: moralistic, pietistic, prudish

Antonyms: permissive, prurient

Sentence: His puritanical parents saw any kind of pleasure as the road to damnation.

  1. Vaunt (verb)

Meaning: boast about or praise (something), especially excessively. (अपनी बड़ाई करना)

Synonyms: boast, brag, pride

Antonyms: belittle, underrate

Sentence: Even the noblest of fellows have been known to vaunt a bit.
