‘Vocabulary’
- Alms (noun)
Meaning: a gift of money or its equivalent to a charity, humanitarian cause, or public institution (दान)
Synonyms: donation, contribution, benefaction
Sentence: It was their religious duty to give alms to the poor.
- Reverie (noun)
Meaning: a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream. (भावना)
Synonyms: daydream, fantasy, vision
Sentence: She fell into a reverie about her childhood.
- Flaunt (verb)
Meaning: display (something) ostentatiously, especially in order to provoke envy or admiration or to show defiance. (इठलाना)
Synonyms: show off, exhibit, flash
Antonyms: disguise, hide
Sentence: The banquet gave the chef a chance to flaunt his talents.
- Splay (verb)
Meaning: spread open or apart; move out of position (फैलाना)
Synonyms: spread, split, scatter
Antonyms: unite, connect
Sentence: The petals splay out from the middle of the flower.
- Peeved (verb)
Meaning: to disturb the peace of mind of (someone) especially by repeated disagreeable acts (नाराज़)
Synonyms: irritate, annoy, anger
Antonyms: pleased, appeased, delighted
Sentence: He was peeved because we didn’t ask him what he thought about the idea.
- Feckless (adj.)
Meaning: lacking initiative or strength of character; irresponsible. (अबल)
Synonyms: useless, worthless, incompetent
Antonyms: efficient, expedient, efficacious
Sentence: He regarded the young man as feckless and irresponsible.
- Raze (verb)
Meaning: to destroy (as a building) completely by knocking down or breaking to pieces (तबाह करना)
Synonyms: demolish, destroy, tear down
Antonyms: build, construct, raise
Sentence: Dozens of villages have been razed.
- Confide (verb)
Meaning: tell someone about a secret or private matter while trusting them not to repeat it to others. (गुप्त बात कहना)
Synonyms: reveal, disclose, divulge
Antonyms: retain, withhold, keep
Sentence: He confided his fears to his mother.
- Curio (noun)
Meaning: a small object displayed for its attractiveness or interest (अनोखा)
Synonyms: ornamental, souvenir, novelty
Sentence: They had such fun over the wonderful box of curios that Jack had sent from India.
- Mirth (noun)
Meaning: amusement, especially as expressed in laughter. (प्रमोद)
Synonyms: merriment, glee, cheerfulness
Antonyms: sorrow, sadness, gloom
Sentence: The little girl burbled with mirth.
