The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  22nd June 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Swarming (adj.)

Meaning: moving in or forming a large or dense group. (झुंड)

Synonyms: abounding, abundant, crowd

Antonyms: devoid, empty

Sentence: The place was swarming with police and displaced residents.

  1. Confabulate (verb)

Meaning: to exchange viewpoints or seek advice for the purpose of finding a solution to a problem (बातचीत करना)

Synonyms: consult, confer, discuss

Sentence: I’d like to confabulate with my friends at weekends.

  1. Anomalous (adj.)

Meaning: deviating from what is standard, normal, or expected. (नियमविरूद्ध)

Synonyms: abnormal, atypical, nontypical

Antonyms: natural, normal, regular

  1. Staple (noun)

Meaning: the main or greater part of something as distinguished from its subordinate parts (प्रमुख)

Synonyms: core, chief, major

Antonyms: accessory, component, adjunct

Sentence: Rice is the staple diet in many Asian countries.

  1. Trouncing (verb)

Meaning: defeat heavily in a contest. (पूरी तरह से हार)

Synonyms: defeat utterly, beating, defeat

Antonyms: success, triumph, victory

Sentence: She trounced her rivals in the election.

  1. Imperceptibly (adv.)

Meaning: in a way that is so slight, gradual, or subtle as not to be perceived. (अगोचर रूप से)

Synonyms: crescively, gradually

Antonyms: abruptly, suddenly

Sentence: The disease develops gradually and imperceptibly.

  1. Catharsis (noun)

Meaning: the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions. (विरेचन)

Synonyms: purging, purgation, purification

Sentence: Music is a means of catharsis for them.

  1. Tranche (noun)

Meaning: a portion of something, especially money. (अंश)

Synonyms: fraction, tiny part, bit

Antonyms: lot, plenty, loads

  1. Balk (verb)

Meaning: to prevent from achieving a goal (बाधा डालना)

Synonyms: block, hinder, thwart

Antonyms: facilitate, assist, encourage

Sentence: Their strategies to balk at the enemy had failed.

  1. Terse (adj.)

Meaning: marked by the use of few words to convey much information or meaning (संक्षिप्त)

Synonyms: concise, brief, summary

Antonyms: verbose, prolix, wordy

Sentence: Derek’s terse reply ended the conversation.
