‘Vocabulary’
- Inundate (verb)
Meaning: overwhelm (someone) with things or people to be dealt with. (पाट देना)
Synonyms: overwhelm, overpower, overburden
Sentence: We’ve been inundated with complaints from listeners.
- Endurance (noun)
Meaning: the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way. (धैर्य)
Synonyms: toleration, bearing, tolerance
Antonyms: surcease, termination, abridgment
Sentence: She was close to the limit of her endurance.
- Aggrieved (adj.)
Meaning: feeling resentment at having been unfairly treated. (पीड़ित)
Synonyms: resentful, affronted, indignant
Antonyms: gratified, pleased, satisfied
Sentence: He felt aggrieved at not being chosen for the team.
- Agile (adj.)
Meaning: able to move quickly and easily. (चुस्त)
Synonyms: lithe, nimble, spry
Antonyms: clumsy, gawky, graceless
Sentence: She is such an agile dancer!
- Parsimony (noun)
Meaning: extreme unwillingness to spend money or use resources. (बचत)
Synonyms: meanness, miserliness, parsimoniousness
Antonyms: diseconomy, wastefulness, lavishness
Sentence: Due to official parsimony only one machine was built.
- Monotonous (adj.)
Meaning: dull, tedious, and repetitious; lacking in variety and interest. (नीरस)
Synonyms: tedious, boring, dull
Antonyms: engaging, engrossing, gripping
Sentence: The music became monotonous after a while.
- Allay (verb)
Meaning: diminish or put at rest (fear, suspicion, or worry). (कम करना)
Synonyms: reduce, diminish, decrease
Antonyms: intensify, increase
Sentence: The government is keen to allay the public’s fears.
- Proactive (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person, policy, or action) creating or controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding to it after it has happened. (सक्रिय)
Synonyms: enterprising, take-charge, energetic
Antonyms: sluggish, anergic, inoperable
Sentence: Companies are going to have to be more proactive about environmental management.
- Plight (noun)
Meaning: a dangerous, difficult, or otherwise unfortunate situation. (दुर्दशा)
Synonyms: predicament, trouble, unfortunate situation
Antonyms: boon, blessing, good fortune
Sentence: The plight of starving people is too awful to think about.
- Sordid (adj.)
Meaning: involving ignoble actions and motives; arousing moral distaste and contempt. (घिनौना)
Synonyms: sleazy, seedy, seamy
Antonyms: clean, unstained, tidy
Sentence: The whole sordid affair came out in the press.
