‘Vocabulary’
- Interlocutor (noun)
Meaning: a person who takes part in a dialogue or conversation. (वार्ताकार)
Synonyms: dialogist, conversationalist, speaker
Sentence: Abraham was able to act as interpreter and interlocutor for our group.
- Iconoclast (noun)
Meaning: a person who does not conform to generally accepted standards or customs (संप्रदायवादी)
Synonyms: counterculturist, deviant, nonconformist
Antonyms: conformer, conformist
Sentence: But he shows little sign of being an iconoclast.
- Promontory (noun)
Meaning: a point of high land that juts out into a large body of water; a headland. (चोटी)
Synonyms: headland, ness, point
Sentence: Yet another fortress stands on a promontory only half a mile away.
- Luminary (noun)
Meaning: a person who inspires or influences others, especially one prominent in a particular sphere. (प्रभावशाली व्यक्ति)
Synonyms: guiding light, inspiration, leader
Sentence: Luminaries from the worlds of sports, entertainment, and politics were at the gala.
- Querulous (adj.)
Meaning: complaining in a petulant or whining manner. (विलापी)
Synonyms: petulant, complaining, fretful
Antonyms: forbearing, tolerant, uncomplaining
Sentence: He became increasingly dissatisfied and querulous in his old age.
- Mire (noun)
Meaning: a situation or state of difficulty, distress, or embarrassment from which it is hard to extricate oneself. (मुसीबत में फसना)
Synonyms: rattrap, difficult situation
Sentence: We must not be drawn into the mire of civil war.
- Animadversion (noun)
Meaning: criticism or censure. (निन्दा)
Synonyms: harsh criticism, disapproval.
Antonyms: extol, laud, praise
Sentence: He was infuriated by their constant animadversion.
- Agog (adj.)
Meaning: very eager or curious to hear or see something. (उत्सुक)
Synonyms: eager, excited, impatient
Antonyms: apathetic, unenthusiastic, incurious
Sentence: I’ve been agog all afternoon, waiting for the next part of your story.
- Freebie (noun)
Meaning: a thing given free of charge. (मुफ्त)
Synonyms: bequest, favor, present
Antonyms: bribe, douceur
Sentence: The journalists were all given a freebie lunch.
- Enjoin (verb)
Meaning: instruct or urge (someone) to do something. (हुक्म चलाना)
Synonyms: command, encourage, call (for)
Antonyms: allow, let, permit
Sentence: The organisation has been enjoined to end all restrictions.
