 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Fracas (noun)

Meaning: a noisy disturbance or quarrel. (कोलाहल)

Synonyms: quarrel, scuffle. brawl

Antonyms: truce

Sentence: Eight people were injured in the fracas.

  1. Sententious (adj.)

Meaning: given to moralizing in a pompous or affected manner. (उपदेशात्मक)

Synonyms: moralistic, sermonic, didactic

Sentence: The document was sententious and pompous.

  1. Jamboree (noun)

Meaning: a large celebration or party, typically a lavish and boisterous one. (उत्सव)

Synonyms: rally, gathering, get-together

Sentence: The film industry’s annual jamboree was in Cannes.

  1. Desiderate (verb)

Meaning: feel a keen desire for (something lacking or absent). (इच्छा करना)

Synonyms: crave, desire, want

Antonyms: detest, hate, despise

Sentence: A vast gulf between what they desiderate and what they deserve.

  1. Parlance (noun)

Meaning: a particular way of speaking or using words, especially a way common to those with a particular job or interest. (बोल-चाल)

Synonyms: dialect, vernacular, idiom

Sentence: In military parlance, this is known as a fast retreat.

  1. Persevere (verb)

Meaning: continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or with little or no prospect of success. (दृढ़ रहना)

Synonyms: continue, carry on, go on

Antonyms: quit, give up, submit

Sentence: You’ll need to persevere if you want the business to succeed.

  1. Objurgate (verb)

Meaning: to express public or formal disapproval of (आपत्ति होना)

Synonyms: reprimand, censure, condemn

Antonyms: endorse, honor, cite

Sentence: “Don’t objurgate the child, anyone can spill milk!”.

  1. Protract (verb)

Meaning: to make longer (फैलना)

Synonyms: lengthen, prolong, extend

Antonyms: shorten, curtail, abridge

Sentence: Let’s not protract the debate any further.

  1. Aromatic (adj.)

Meaning: having a pleasant and distinctive smell. (खुशबूदार)

Synonyms: fragrant, scented, redolent

Antonyms: malodorous, smelly, stinky

Sentence: The wine has a rich aromatic flavor.

  1. Pagination (noun)

Meaning: the sequence of numbers assigned to pages in a book or periodical. (पृष्ठ पर अंक लगाना)

Synonyms: numbering, enumerating

Sentence: Our printing forefathers were notoriously careless about their pagination.
