 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Highfalutin (adj.)

Meaning: (especially of speech, writing, or ideas) pompous or pretentious. (भव्य)

Synonyms: pretentious, grandiose, rhetorical

Antonyms: modest, humble, lowly

Sentence: It is a mistake to use highfalutin language when you advertise to uneducated people.

  1. Ornate (adj.)

Meaning: made in an intricate shape or decorated with complex patterns. (सरूप)

Synonyms: decorated, embellished, adorned

Antonyms: plain, unadorned

Sentence: The church has an ornate black and white marbled interior.

  1. Bandwagon (noun)

Meaning: a series of activities undertaken to achieve a goal (अभियान)

Synonyms: campaign, movement, crusade

Sentence: They tried to get everyone on the bandwagon about forming a neighborhood cleanup.

  1. Tacit (adj.)

Meaning: understood or implied without being stated. (समझना)

Synonyms: implied, implicit, understood

Antonyms: explicit, express, obvious

Sentence: The deal had the tacit approval of the President.

  1. Marring (verb)

Meaning: to affect slightly with something morally bad or undesirable (बिगाड़ना)

Synonyms: tainting, spoiling, staining

Antonyms: cleansing, purifying

Sentence: One scabbed sheep will mar a whole flock.

  1. Strewn (verb)

Meaning: to cover by or as if by scattering something over or on (बिखेरना)

Synonyms: spray, sprinkle, scatter

Sentence: Sidewalks were strewed with trash left by the parade watchers.

  1. Revocation (noun)

Meaning: the official cancellation of a decree, decision, or promise. (रद्दकरण)

Synonyms: cancellation, repeal, abandonment

Antonyms: continuation, beginning, initiation

Sentence: The government announced its revocation of 311 banking licences.

  1. Fie (interjection)

Meaning: how surprising, doubtful, or unbelievable (धिक!)

Synonyms: oh, what

Sentence: Fie! you expect me to believe that sorry excuse?

  1. Mishmash (noun)

Meaning: an unorganized collection or mixture of various things (मिश्रण)

Synonyms: jumble, medley, clutter

Sentence: The painting was just a mishmash of colors and abstract shapes as far as we could tell.

  1. Fad (noun)

Meaning: a practice or interest that is very popular for a short time (उन्माद)

Synonyms: craze, trend, vogue

Antonyms: standard, classic

Sentence: His interest in photography is only a passing fad.
