The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  24th April 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Fritter (verb)

Meaning: waste time, money, or energy on trifling matters. (व्यर्थ नष्ट करना)

Synonyms: squander, waste, misuse

Antonyms: conserve, save

Sentence: I wish we hadn’t frittered the money away so easily

  1. Proponent (noun)

Meaning: a person who actively supports or favors a cause (समर्थक)

Synonyms: advocate, supporter, upholder

Antonyms: adversary, antagonist, opponent

Sentence: She has always been a strong proponent of women’s rights.

  1. Sundry (adj.)

Meaning: of various kinds; several (विविध)

Synonyms: various, varied, miscellaneous

Antonyms: alike, identical, like

Sentence: This cream can be used to treat sundry minor injuries.

  1. Annulled (verb)

Meaning: declare invalid (an official agreement, decision, or result). (रद्द करना)

Synonyms: declare invalid, nullify, invalidate

Antonyms: allowed, approved, authorized

Sentence: His second marriage was annulled because he never divorced his first wife.

  1. Provenance (noun)

Meaning: the place of origin or earliest known history of something. (उत्पत्ति)

Synonyms: origin, source, place of origin

Sentence: The provenance of the paintings is unknown.

  1. Ilk (noun)

Meaning: a number of persons or things that are grouped together because they have something in common (श्रेणी)

Synonyms: class, category, group

Sentence: I can’t tolerate people of his ilk.

  1. Obscenity (noun)

Meaning: the state or quality of being obscene; obscene behavior, language, or images. (अभद्रता)

Synonyms: indecency, immorality, impropriety

Antonyms: priggery, prudery, decency

Sentence: Existing laws on obscenity are to be tightened.

  1. Adjunct (noun)

Meaning: a person who helps a more skilled person (सहायक)

Synonyms: adjutant, apprentice, assistant

Sentence: He serves as an adjunct to the congressional delegation on its fact-finding mission.

  1. Howbeit (adv.)

Meaning: nevertheless; however. (परन्तु)

Synonyms: even so, however, nevertheless

Antonyms: all the same

Sentence: I’ve never written a poem before; howbeit, I feel my first attempt is quite good

  1. Sycophancy (noun)

Meaning: obsequious behavior toward someone important in order to gain advantage. (हाँ में हाँ मिलाना)

Synonyms: fawning, flattery, obsequiousness

Antonyms: bad-mouthing, belittlement

Sentence: Sycophancy was the device of the least trustworthy.
