‘Vocabulary’
- Ebb (verb)
Meaning: (of an emotion or quality) gradually lessen or reduce. (अवनति)
Synonyms: diminish, dwindle, wane
Antonyms: ascent, rise, upswing
Sentence: Every tide has its ebb.
- Harbinger (noun)
Meaning: a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another. (अग्र-दूत)
Synonyms: herald, sign, indicator
Sentence: The cuckoo is a harbinger of spring.
- Mingling (verb)
Meaning: mix or cause to mix together. (घुलना मिलना)
Synonyms: mix, blend, intermingle
Antonyms: breaking up, separating, unmixing
Sentence: The site where the river and the ocean mingle their waters to form a broad estuary.
- Impounding (verb)
Meaning: seize and take legal custody of (something, especially a vehicle, goods, or documents) because of an infringement of a law or regulation. (परिबंधन)
Synonyms: confiscate, appropriate, take possession of
Antonyms: emancipating, enfranchising, manumitting
Sentence: The vehicle was impounded as part of the police investigation.
- Arbiter (noun)
Meaning: a person who settles a dispute or has ultimate authority in a matter. (मध्यस्थ)
Synonyms: adjudicator, arbitrator, judge
Sentence: He was the ultimate arbiter on both theological and political matters.
- Gaffer (noun)
Meaning: an old man. (वृद्ध)
Synonyms: old man, elderly man, senior citizen
Antonyms: youngster, youth, adolescent
Sentence: That gaffer going into the pub is 90 years old.
- Jurisprudence (noun)
Meaning: the theory or philosophy of law. (विधिशास्त्र)
Synonyms: judiciary, justice, law
Sentence: Codification is the highest contribution of jurisprudence.
- Gratuitous (adj.)
Meaning: uncalled for; lacking good reason; unwarranted. (ऐच्छिक)
Synonyms: unjustified, without reason, uncalled for
Antonyms: essential, indispensable, necessary
Sentence: There’s too much crime and gratuitous violence on TV.
- Pique (noun)
Meaning: a feeling of irritation or resentment resulting from a slight, especially to one’s pride. (मनमुटाव)
Synonyms: irritation, annoyance, resentment
Antonyms: appeasement, mollification, pacification
Sentence: In a fit of pique, he posted embarrassing photos of his friend on the Internet.
- Grotesque (adj.)
Meaning: comically or repulsively ugly or distorted. (विचित्र)
Synonyms: malformed, deformed, strange
Antonyms: impressive, pretty, ravishing
Sentence: That bloody Halloween mask is grotesque.
