‘Vocabulary’
- Swathes (verb)
Meaning: wrap in several layers of fabric. (पट्टी)
Synonyms: wrap, envelop, bind
Sentence: His hands were swathed in bandages.
- Testament (noun)
Meaning: something presented in support of the truth or accuracy of a claim (प्रमाण)
Synonyms: proof. testimony. evidence
Antonyms: rebuttal, refutation, presumption
Sentence: The monument is a worthy testament to the courage of the men who fought in the war.
- Diktats (noun)
Meaning: an order or decree imposed by someone in power without popular consent. (अध्यादेश)
Synonyms: edict, decree, order
Sentence: A democratic government has to be something wanted by that nation’s citizens and not something created by a foreign power’s diktat.
- Fickle (adj.)
Meaning: changing frequently, especially as regards one’s loyalties, interests, or affection. (अस्थिर)
Synonyms: capricious, changeable, variable
Antonyms: constant, certain, unchanging
Sentence: Fortune is fickle.
- Helmsmanship (noun)
Meaning: the ability to make good judgments and quick decisions, typically in a particular domain. (कुशाग्रता)
Synonyms: astuteness, acumen, acuity
Antonyms: stupidity, foolishness, witlessness
Sentence: Clinton’s helmsmanship for the past four years left a lot to be desired
- Vitiate (verb)
Meaning: spoil or impair the quality or efficiency of. (ख़राब करना)
Synonyms: mar, taint, spoil
Antonyms: improve, reconstruct
Sentence: Smoking vitiates the air.
- Ruction (noun)
Meaning: a rough and often noisy fight usually involving several people (झगड़ा)
Synonyms: brawl, clash, ruckus
Antonyms: peace, hush, tranquillity
Sentence: The announcement caused serious ruction.
- Delve (verb)
Meaning: reach inside a receptacle and search for something. (खोजना)
Synonyms: rummage (around) in, search (through), hunt through
Sentence: It’s not always a good idea to delve too deeply into someone’s past.
- Venal (adj.)
Meaning: showing or motivated by susceptibility to bribery. (घूसख़ोर)
Synonyms: corrupt, corruptible, bribable
Antonyms: incorruptible, ethical, honest
Sentence: They are accused of being involved in venal practices.
- Sprightly (adj.)
Meaning: (especially of an old person) lively; full of energy. (फुरतीला)
Synonyms: lively, spry, energetic
Antonyms: inactive, lackadaisical, languid
Sentence: He’s a sprightly old man of seventy-five.
