The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  24th February 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Confrontation (noun)

Meaning: a hostile or argumentative meeting or situation between opposing parties. (आमना-सामना)

Synonyms: conflict, clash, rivalry

Antonyms: peace, harmony, concord

Sentence: There was a head-on confrontation between management and unions.

  1. Haphazard (adj.)

Meaning: lacking any obvious principle of organization. (बेढ़ंगा)

Synonyms: random, unplanned, unsystematic

Antonyms: systematic, orderly, regular

Sentence: The government’s approach to the problem was haphazard.

  1. Ebullient (adj.)

Meaning: cheerful and full of energy. (जोशीला)

Synonyms: exuberant, buoyant, cheerful

Antonyms: indolent, lazy, sluggish

Sentence: My father is a naturally ebullient personality.

  1. Exculpate (verb)

Meaning: show or declare that (someone) is not guilty of wrongdoing. (निर्दोष सिद्ध करना)

Synonyms: absolve, acquit, clear

Antonyms: accuse, arraign

Sentence: He exculpate himself from stealing the money.

  1. Veneer (noun)

Meaning: a deceptively attractive external appearance (दिखावा)

Synonyms: facade, gloss

Sentence: The veneer of civility that the neighbours had maintained over the years disappeared with the filing of the first lawsuit.

  1. Relegate (verb)

Meaning: consign or dismiss to an inferior rank or position. (बाहर निकाल देना)

Synonyms: downgrade, lower in rank, put down

Antonyms: ascent, rise, upswing

Sentence: They aim to prevent women from being relegated to a secondary role.

  1. Vaunt (verb)

Meaning: boast about or praise (something), especially excessively. (अपनी बड़ाई करना)

Synonyms: boast, brag, pride

Antonyms: belittle, underrate

Sentence: Even the noblest of fellows have been known to vaunt a bit.

  1. Hale and Hearty (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person, especially an elderly one) strong and healthy. (चुस्त और तंदुरुस्त)

Synonyms: healthy, well, fit

Antonyms: ill, feeble, sick

Sentence: She was still hale and hearty in her nineties.

  1. Sedentary (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) tending to spend much time seated; somewhat inactive. (निष्क्रिय)

Synonyms: dormant, immobile, inanimate

Antonyms: active, mobile, busy

Sentence: They led a sedentary life after retirement, spending their days in front of the television.

  1. Putative (adj.)

Meaning: generally considered or reputed to be. (ख्यात)

Synonyms: supposed, assumed, presumed

Antonyms: real, unlikely

Sentence: The putative reason for her dismissal was poor job performance.
