 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Denouement (noun)

Meaning: the final part of a play, movie, or narrative in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved. (अंतिम)

Synonyms: final act, climax, epilogue

Antonyms: beginning, start

Sentence: The film’s denouement was unsatisfying and ambiguous.

  1. Gaiety (noun)

Meaning: the state or quality of being lighthearted or cheerful. (आमोद-प्रमोद)

Synonyms: cheerfulness, merriment, joy

Antonyms: misery, mourning, despondence

Sentence: Their gaiety helped the party a lot.

  1. Ludicrous (adj.)

Meaning: so foolish, unreasonable, or out of place as to be amusing; ridiculous. (ऊटपटांग)

Synonyms: absurd, ridiculous, farcical

Antonyms: believable, conceivable, rational

Sentence: It’s ludicrous that I have been fined.

  1. Desertion (noun)

Meaning: the action of deserting a person, cause, or organization. (परित्याग)

Synonyms: abandonment, leaving, forsaking

Antonyms: reclamation, retrieval

Sentence: I resented what I saw as my parents’ desertion.

  1. Plight (noun)

Meaning: a dangerous, difficult, or otherwise unfortunate situation. (दुर्दशा)

Synonyms: predicament, trouble, unfortunate situation

Antonyms: boon, blessing, good fortune

Sentence: The plight of starving people is too awful to think about.

  1. Impunity (noun)

Meaning: exemption from punishment or freedom from the injurious consequences of an action. (दण्ड मुक्ति)

Synonyms: indemnity, exemption, freedom

Antonyms: exposure, liability, vulnerability

Sentence: You cannot break the law with impunity.

  1. Debacle (noun)

Meaning: a sudden and ignominious failure; a fiasco. (पराजय)

Synonyms: fiasco, failure, catastrophe

Antonyms: success, winner

Sentence: The economic debacle that became known as the Great Depression.

  1. Sagacious (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing keen mental discernment and good judgment (मेधावी)

Synonyms: shrewd, wise, clever

Antonyms: dull, stupid, foolish

Sentence: He was a shrewd, sagacious old man.

  1. Corollary (noun)

Meaning: a proposition that follows from (and is often appended to) one already proved. (परिणाम)

Synonyms: conclusion, aftereffect, consequence

Antonyms: cause, occasion, reason

Sentence: The huge increases in unemployment were the corollary of expenditure cuts.

  1. Secession (noun)

Meaning: the action of withdrawing formally from membership of a federation or body, especially a political state. (निष्कासन)

Synonyms: withdrawal, break, breakaway

Antonyms: joining, unification

Sentence: The republics want secession from the union.
