In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Haven (noun)

Meaning: a place of safety or refuge. (शरण)

Synonyms: refuge, shelter, sanctuary

Sentence: The river banks are a haven for wildlife.

  1. Renege (verb)

Meaning: go back on a promise, undertaking, or contract. (इनकार)

Synonyms: withdraw, recall, retract

Antonyms: fulfil, keep

Sentence: If you renege on the deal now, I’ll fight you in the courts.

  1. Heady (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing a practical cleverness or judgment (चतुर)

Synonyms: smart, astute, experienced

Antonyms: naive, guileless, innocent

Sentence: one of the headiest politicians around, he knows how to read the public mood at any given moment.

  1. Sacked (verb)

Meaning: to let go from office, service, or employment (बर्खास्त)

Synonyms: dismissed, fired, discharged

Antonyms: employed, engaged, hired

Sentence: He was sacked for computer misuse.

  1. Virtuosity (noun)

Meaning: great skill in music or another artistic pursuit. (कलाप्रवीण)

Synonyms: mastery, expertise, proficiency

Antonyms: incompetency, unfamiliarity

Sentence: At that time, his virtuosity on the trumpet had no parallel in jazz.

  1. Cavalier (adj.)

Meaning: showing a lack of proper concern; offhand. (अभिमानपूर्ण)

Synonyms: arrogant, assumptive, bumptious

Antonyms: humble, lowly, modest

Sentence: The club’s owner showed a cavalier attitude to the licensing laws.

  1. Dole (verb)

Meaning: distribute shares of something. (बांटना)

Synonyms: deal out, share out, divide up

Sentence: The scanty portions of food doled out to them.

  1. Therein (adv.)

Meaning: in that place, document, or respect. (यहां)

Synonyms: here, hither, there

Sentence: It shall be sufficient evidence of the facts therein contained.

  1. Sparse (adj.)

Meaning: thinly dispersed or scattered. (तितर-बितर)

Synonyms: scattered, thinly distributed, scarce

Sentence: Vegetation becomes sparse higher up the mountains.

  1. Bankrolled (verb)

Meaning: support (a person, organization, or project) financially. (आर्थिक रूप से समर्थन करना)

Synonyms: finance, pay for, funded

Antonyms: defunded

Sentence: Several corporations bankrolled the Broadway musical.
