 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Inure (verb)

Meaning: to make able to withstand physical hardship, strain, or exposure (आदी होना)

Synonyms: adapt, strengthen, harden

Antonyms: soften, weaken, exhaust

Sentence: The prisoners quickly became inured to the harsh conditions.

  1. Solitude (noun)

Meaning: the state of being alone or kept apart from others (एकांत)

Synonyms: privacy, isolation, loneliness

Antonyms: society, companionship, company

Sentence: Time orbit is just one solitude of the subway.

  1. Sagacity (noun)

Meaning: the ability to understand inner qualities or relationships (बुद्धिमत्ता)

Synonyms: intelligence, smartness, brilliance

Antonyms: dullness, density, obtuseness

Sentence: A novelist of surprising sagacity considering his youthfulness.

  1. Lusciousness (noun)

Meaning: the quality of being delicious (सुस्वादुता)

Synonyms: deliciousness, tastiness, savour

Antonyms: flatness, insipidity, tastelessness

Sentence: it was hard to resist the decadent lusciousness of the three-layer chocolate cake

  1. Lugubrious (adj.)

Meaning: expressing or suggesting mourning (उदास)

Synonyms: mournful, weeping, funeral

Antonyms: joyful, triumphant, happy

Sentence: James was in a lugubrious mood.

  1. Annihilate (verb)

Meaning: to destroy all traces of (नाश होना)

Synonyms: erase, abolish, destroy

Antonyms: protect, preserve, save

Sentence: The enemy was annihilated.

  1. Supercilious (adj.)

Meaning: having a feeling of superiority that shows itself in an overbearing attitude (घमंडी)

Synonyms: arrogant, superior, cavalier

Antonyms: humble, modest, lowly

Sentence: The dress shop assistant was very supercilious.

  1. Quiddity (noun)

Meaning: an odd or peculiar habit (विचित्र)

Synonyms: trick, trait, characteristic

Antonyms: conformity, sameness

Sentence: Rembrandt’s genius was his unparalleled ability to render a person’s quiddity in a single portrait.

  1. Criterion (noun)

Meaning: something set up as an example against which others of the same type are compared (मापदंड)

Synonyms: standard, benchmark, measure

Antonyms: deviation, abnormality, aberration

Sentence: Senior managers stipulated work-life balance as their main criterion when choosing jobs.

  1. Incandescent (adj.)

Meaning: giving off or reflecting much light (चमक)

Synonyms: luminous, glowing, shining

Antonyms: dim, dull, dark

Sentence: The mountain’s snow-white peak was incandescent against the blue sky.
