‘Vocabulary’
- Vainglorious (adj.)
Meaning: excessively proud of oneself or one’s achievements; overly vain. (गुमानी)
Synonyms: assured, biggety, complacent
Antonyms: egoless, humble, modest
Sentence: The vainglorious trainer spent more flexing his muscles than he did helping build his client’s.
- Steadfastly (adv.)
Meaning: in a resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering manner. (लगातार)
Synonyms: continuously, ploddingly, steadily
Antonyms: indolently, desultorily
Sentence: She was steadfastly in support of women’s rights.
- Stutter (verb)
Meaning: talk with continued involuntary repetition of sounds, especially initial consonants. (हकलाना)
Synonyms: stammer, stumble, speak haltingly
Antonyms: enunciate, pronounce
Sentence: I used to stutter when I was a child.
- Cagey (adj.)
Meaning: reluctant to give information owing to caution or suspicion. (गुप्त)
Synonyms: secretive, guarded, noncommittal
Antonyms: disposed, open
Sentence: Manufacturers are cagey about the recipes they use to create a wine.
- Avowal (noun)
Meaning: a solemn and often public declaration of the truth or existence of something (घोषणा-पत्र)
Synonyms: affirmation, assertion, asseveration
Antonyms: disavowal, denial
Sentence: The press carried his avowal throughout the country.
- Unbridled (adj.)
Meaning: uncontrolled; unconstrained. (निरंकुश)
Synonyms: unrestrained, unconstrained, uncontrolled
Antonyms: bridled, constrained, controlled
Sentence: This case was solved only because of one detective’s unbridled determination to bring the killer to justice
- Nonplussed (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person) surprised and confused so much that they are unsure how to react. (भौचक)
Synonyms: confused, bewildered, bemused
Antonyms: undaunted, unfazed
Sentence: I was completely nonplussed by his sudden appearance.
- Conflagration (noun)
Meaning: an extensive fire which destroys a great deal of land or property. (भीषण आग)
Synonyms: fire, blaze, flames
Sentence: A conflagration in 1947 reduced 90 percent of the houses to ashes.
- Prattling (verb)
Meaning: talk at length in a foolish or inconsequential way. (बकवास)
Synonyms: chatter, babble, prate
Antonyms: articulating, enunciating
Sentence: The villagers are prattling on about the village gossip.
- Inundation (noun)
Meaning: a great flow of water or of something that overwhelms (सैलाब)
Synonyms: overflow, deluge, torrent
Antonyms: drought, dribble, drip
Sentence: The family’s shed was washed away in the last inundation.
