The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  26th February 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Incursion (noun)

Meaning: an invasion or attack, especially a sudden or brief one. (आक्रमण)

Synonyms: attack on, assault on, raid on

Sentence: There were incursions from the border every summer.

  1. Covenant (noun)

Meaning: an agreement. (प्रतिज्ञापत्र)

Synonyms: contract, compact, treaty

Sentence: There was a covenant between them that her name was never to be mentioned.

  1. Repose (noun)

Meaning: a state of rest, sleep, or tranquility. (विश्राम)

Synonyms: rest, relaxation, inactivity

Antonyms: exertion, labor, toil

Sentence: The doctor ordered a period of repose for the patient recovering from pneumonia.

  1. Roistering (verb)

Meaning: enjoy oneself or celebrate in a noisy or boisterous way. (समारोह मनाना)

Synonyms: enjoy oneself, celebrate, revel

Antonyms: hushed, noiseless, quiet

Sentence: The earl’s wastrel son had spent the best part of his youth roistering and gambling.

  1. Knack (noun)

Meaning: an acquired or natural skill at performing a task. (आदत)

Synonyms: aptitude, aptness, skill

Antonyms: inability, incapacity

Sentence: He has a knack for saying the wrong thing.

  1. Lugubrious (adj.)

Meaning: looking or sounding sad and dismal. (शोकाकुल)

Synonyms: mournful, gloomy, sad

Antonyms: delighted, exulting, glorying

Sentence: His face looked even more lugubrious than usual.

  1. Confederate (noun)

Meaning: a person one works with, especially in something secret or illegal; an accomplice. (साथी)

Synonyms: associate, partner, accomplice

Sentence: The police were able to track down his confederates once the thief started talking.

  1. Remorseful (adj.)

Meaning: filled with remorse; sorry. (ग्लानि से पूर्ण)

Synonyms: sorry, full of regret, regretful

Antonyms: impenitent, remorseless, unapologetic

Sentence: He seemed genuinely remorseful for what he had done.

  1. Crotchety (adj.)

Meaning: easily irritated or annoyed (चिड़चिड़ा)

Synonyms: choleric, crabby, cranky

Antonyms: affable, companionable, cordial

Sentence: I get crotchety after a long day at work

  1. Daunt (verb)

Meaning: make (someone) feel intimidated or apprehensive. (भयभीत करना)

Synonyms: intimidate, abash, ruffle

Antonyms: embolden, encourage, strengthen

Sentence: The raging inferno didn’t daunt the firefighters for a moment.
