The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  26th November 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Inane (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing a lack of common sense or judgment; absurd and foolish (मूर्खतापूर्ण)

Synonyms: silly, foolish, stupid

Antonyms: meaningful, significant, eloquent

Sentence: Penny began an inane conversation about the book she was reading to fill the silence.

  1. Badger (verb)

Meaning: repeatedly ask (someone) to do something; pester. (परेशान करना)

Synonyms: tease, pester, bother

Sentence: Don’t constantly badger people with stupid questions.

  1. Fiduciaries (noun)

Meaning: a person or thing with trustworthy qualities. (भरोसेमंद)

Synonyms: trustee, trustworthy, loyal

Antonyms: unreliable, untrustworthy

Sentence: This is otherwise known as a fiduciary relationship.

  1. Unintelligible (adj.)

Meaning: impossible to understand. (अस्पष्ट)

Synonyms: incomprehensible, indiscernible, confusing

Antonyms: intelligible, understandable, comprehensible

Sentence: Dolphin sounds are unintelligible to humans.

  1. Tinderbox (noun)

Meaning: a potentially explosive place or situation (हिंसक स्थिति)

Synonyms: violent, volcanic, ferocious

Antonyms: nonviolent, peaceful, peaceable

Sentence: It was clearly a tinderbox situation with demonstrators likely to become violent at any moment.

  1. Waspish (adj.)

Meaning: easily irritated or annoyed (चिड़चिड़ा)

Synonyms: irritable, fiery, peevish

Antonyms: genial, friendly, affable

Sentence: She sounded waspish and impatient.

  1. Increscent (adj.)

Meaning: relating to or denoting an increase or addition (बढनेवाला)

Synonyms: gradual, progressive, incremental

Antonyms: decrescent, decremental

Sentence: The increscent spectral width decreases the spectral beam combining efficiency.

  1. Refractory (adj.)

Meaning: stubborn or unmanageable. (जिद्दी)

Synonyms: obstinate, stubborn, intransigent

Antonyms: flexible, obedient, docile

Sentence: The more Sarah nagged her, the more refractory Cissie became.

  1. Liaison (noun)

Meaning: communication or cooperation which facilitates a close working relationship between people or organizations. (मेल जोल)

Synonyms: cooperation, contact, association

Antonyms: disaffiliation, dissociation, incompatibility

Sentence: We maintained a close liaison with the trade union.

  1. Quashing (verb)

Meaning: reject or void, especially by legal procedure. (रद्द करने)

Synonyms: cancel, reverse, rescind

Antonyms: enact, establish, endorse

Sentence: His conviction was quashed on appeal.
