The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  27th May 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Berserk (adj.)

Meaning: out of control with anger or excitement; wild or frenzied. (पागल)

Synonyms: mad, crazy, insane

Antonyms: calm, sensible, wise

Sentence: The dog went berserk when a wasp stung him.

  1. Nihilistic (adj.)

Meaning: rejecting all religious and moral principles in the belief that life is meaningless. (शून्यवाद संबंधी)

Synonyms: hopeless, discouraging, unpromising

Antonyms: hopeful, cheerful, cheery

Sentence: Her latest play is a nihilistic vision of the world of the future.

  1. Glint (noun)

Meaning: give out or reflect small flashes of light. (चमक)

Synonyms: shine, gleam, sparkle

Antonyms: dimness, dinginess, dullness

Sentence: There was a glint of mischief in her eyes.

  1. Disrelish (verb)

Meaning: regard (something) with dislike or distaste. (नापसंद करना)

Synonyms: aversion, disfavor, dislike

Antonyms: appetite, affection, fondness

Sentence: I disrelish the thought of sitting through endless meetings on the matter

  1. Thy (article)

Meaning: archaic or dialect form of yours. (तेरा)

Synonyms: thine, thee, yours

Sentence: Hide nothing from thy physician.

  1. Dunce (noun)

Meaning: a person who is slow at learning; a stupid person. (मूर्ख)

Synonyms: fool, idiot, stupid person

Antonyms: brainy, genius, intellect

Sentence: It is very impolite to call others a dunce.

  1. Holler (verb)

Meaning: (of a person) give a loud shout or cry. (चिल्लाई)

Synonyms: shout, yell, cry

Antonyms: murmur, mutter, whisper

Sentence: There’s no need to holler, I’m in the next room.

  1. Haggle (verb)

Meaning: dispute or bargain persistently, especially over the cost of something. (सौदेबाज़ी करना)

Synonyms: barter, bargain, negotiate

Sentence: Ella taught her how to haggle with used furniture dealers.

  1. Flouted (verb)

Meaning: openly disregard (a rule, law, or convention). (उल्लंघन)

Synonyms: defy, refuse to obey, disdain

Antonyms: accepted, approved

Sentence: The union had openly flouted the law.

  1. Predilection (noun)

Meaning: a preference or special liking for something; a bias in favor of something. (लाग-लपेट)

Synonyms: liking, fondness, preference

Antonyms: apathy, dislike

Sentence: He has a predilection for fast food.
