‘Vocabulary’
- Pulverize (verb)
Meaning: reduce to fine particles. (टुकड़े टुकड़े करना)
Synonyms: grind, crush, pound
Sentence: The seeds can be used whole or pulverized into flour.
- Foreboding (noun)
Meaning: fearful apprehension; a feeling that something bad will happen. (पूर्वाभास)
Synonyms: apprehension, perturbation, trepidation
Antonyms: anticipation, excitement
Sentence: I felt a gloomy foreboding that something was going to go wrong.
- Avowedly (adv.)
Meaning: as has been asserted, admitted or stated publicly; openly. (स्पष्टतया)
Synonyms: clear-cut, asserted, averred
Antonyms: denied, disregarded
Sentence: The article is avowedly a historical analysis.
- Conciliatory (adj.)
Meaning: intended or likely to placate or pacify. (शांति)
Synonyms: propitiatory, placatory, appeasing
Antonyms: antagonizing, abrasive, aggravating
Sentence: Everyone was in a conciliatory mood at the start of the meeting.
- Humbug (noun)
Meaning: deceptive or false talk or behavior. (पाखण्ड)
Synonyms: hypocrisy, insincerity, dishonesty
Antonyms: original, genuine
Sentence: There was all the usual humbug and obligatory compliments from ministers.
- Propound (verb)
Meaning: put forward (an idea, theory, or point of view) for consideration by others. (प्रतिपादन करना)
Synonyms: put forward, propose, suggest
Sentence: The theory of natural selection was first propounded by Charles Darwin.
- Empathize (verb)
Meaning: understand and share the feelings of another. (सहानुभूति)
Synonyms: commiserate, condole, sympathize
Antonyms: demoralize, discourage, dishearten
Sentence: I clearly empathize with the people who live in those neighborhoods.
- Ostracize (verb)
Meaning: exclude (someone) from a society or group. (समाज से बाहर निकालना)
Synonyms: exclude, shun, exile
Antonyms: repatriation, return, include
Sentence: He was ostracized by his colleagues for refusing to support the strike.
- Referendum (noun)
Meaning: a general vote by the electorate on a single political question that has been referred to them for a direct decision. (जनमत संग्रह)
Synonyms: public vote, ballot, poll
Sentence: They are having a referendum so the public can decide on the controversial issue.
- Splintered (verb)
Meaning: break or cause to break into small sharp fragments. (कुचले)
Synonyms: shatter, break into tiny pieces, break into fragments
Antonyms: unbroken, fixed, repaired
Sentence: I don’t know who has splintered the plates?
