‘Vocabulary’
- Vexatious (adj.)
Meaning: causing or tending to cause annoyance, frustration, or worry. (अफ़सोसनाक)
Synonyms: annoying, vexing, irritating
Antonyms: delightful, pleasing
Sentence: Those vexatious phone calls from telemarketers during the dinner hour.
- Pithily (adv.)
Meaning: in a few words (मतलब की बात)
Synonyms: briefly, compactly, concisely
Antonyms: diffusely, long-windedly, verbosely
Sentence: The observation that “War is hell” is how General Sherman pithily summed up his experiences in combat.
- Devising (verb)
Meaning: plan or invent (a complex procedure, system, or mechanism) by careful thought. (तैयार)
Synonyms: conceive, think up, come up with
Antonyms: copying, duplicating
Sentence: The government is devising a plan to liberate prisoners held in detention camps.
- Benefaction (noun)
Meaning: a donation or gift. (दान)
Synonyms: charity, contribution, donation
Sentence: She made many charitable benefactions.
- Egalitarian (adj.)
Meaning: relating to or believing in the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities. (समानाधिकारवादी)
Synonyms: democratic, modest, unpretentious
Antonyms: aristocratic, elitist
Sentence: The party’s principles are basically egalitarian.
- Fickleness (noun)
Meaning: changeability, especially as regards one’s loyalties or affections. (चंचलता)
Synonyms: capriciousness, changeability, variability
Antonyms: changelessness, constancy, stability
Sentence: While she always criticized the fickleness of human nature.
- Vetted (verb)
Meaning: make a careful and critical examination of (something). (इसका निरीक्षण किया)
Synonyms: screen, assess, evaluate
Sentence: All goods are carefully vetted for quality before they leave the factory.
- Modicum (noun)
Meaning: a small quantity of a particular thing, especially something considered desirable or valuable. (अल्पांश)
Synonyms: little bit, a small amount, particle
Antonyms: abundance, bucket, bunch
Sentence: There’s not even a modicum of truth in her statement.
- Circuitous (adj.)
Meaning: (of a route or journey) longer than the most direct way. (चक्करदार)
Synonyms: roundabout, indirect, winding
Antonyms: direct, straight, straightforward
Sentence: We took a circuitous route to the airport so as to avoid the massive traffic jam on the highway.
- Arcane (adj.)
Meaning: understood by few; mysterious or secret. (रहस्य का)
Synonyms: mysterious, secret, hidden
Antonyms: nonambiguous, obvious, apparent
Sentence: This argument may seem arcane to those not closely involved in the world of finance.
