In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have the English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab daily to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Omniscient (adj.)

Meaning: knowing everything. (सर्वज्ञ)

Synonyms: all-knowing, all-wise, all-seeing

Sentence: The story is told by an omniscient narrator.

  1. Repudiate (verb)

Meaning: refuse to accept or be associated with. (अस्वीकार करना)

Synonyms: reject, renounce, abandon

Antonyms: accept, affirm, embrace

Sentence: She has repudiated policies associated with previous party leaders.

  1. Quotidian (adj.)

Meaning: of or occurring every day; daily. (दैनिक)

Synonyms: daily, regular, diurnal

Antonyms: monthly, weekly, yearly

Sentence: Television has become part of our quotidian existence.

  1. Balderdash (noun)

Meaning: senseless talk or writing; nonsense. (बकवास)

Synonyms: nonsense, gibberish, claptrap

Antonyms: sensibleness, discernment

Sentence: Every word that came out of the drunk man’s mouth was balderdash.

  1. Lugubrious (adj.)

Meaning: looking or sounding sad and dismal. (शोकाकुल)

Synonyms: mournful, gloomy, sad

Antonyms: delighted, exulting, glorying

Sentence: His face looked even more lugubrious than usual.

  1. Camaraderie (noun)

Meaning: mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. (भाई-चारा)

Synonyms: friendship, comradeship, fellowship

Antonyms: forlornness, loneliness, lonesomeness

Sentence: The camaraderie among fellow employees made the tedious work just bearable.

  1. Estrangement (noun)

Meaning: the fact of no longer being on friendly terms or part of a social group. (मनमुटाव)

Synonyms: antipathy, disaffection, hostility

Antonyms: reconcilement, reconciliation

Sentence: They finally came together after years of estrangement.

  1. Hanker (verb)

Meaning: feel a strong desire for or to do something. (लालायित होना)

Synonyms: yearn, crave, desire

Antonyms: abhor, abominate, despise

Sentence: What did you hanker after most when you were in prison?

  1. Ascribing (verb)

Meaning: attribute something to (a cause). (वर्णन करना)

Synonyms: attribute, assign, put down

Sentence: To what do you ascribe your phenomenal success?

  1. Futility (noun)

Meaning: pointlessness or uselessness. (निरर्थकता)

Synonyms: fruitlessness, vanity, pointlessness

Antonyms: use, usefulness, utility

Sentence: The sheer futility of it all exasperates her.
