 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Atavistic (adj.)

Meaning: relating to or characterized by reversion to something ancient or ancestral. (पैतृक)

Synonyms: bygone, erstwhile, former

Antonyms: contemporary, current, modern

Sentence: It would be wrong to interpret them as atavistic remnants.

  1. Musings (noun)

Meaning: a period of reflection or thought. (चिंतन)

Synonyms: meditation, thinking, contemplation

Sentence: His musings were interrupted by the sound of the telephone.

  1. Happenstance (noun)

Meaning: formal + literary something that happens by chance (संयोग)

Synonyms: happenchance, coincidence, incident

Sentence: We met each other by happenstance.

  1. Abash (verb)

Meaning: make (someone) feel embarrassed, disconcerted, or ashamed. (लज्जित करना)

Synonyms: embarrassed, ashamed, shamefaced

Antonyms: comfort, console, relieve

Sentence: The girl was abashed by the laughter of her classmates.

  1. Bluster (noun)

Meaning: talk in a loud, aggressive, or indignant way with little effect. (धमकी)

Synonyms: rant, thunder, boast

Antonyms: quiet, silence, calm

Sentence: I knew that it was all bluster and he wasn’t really angry with me.

  1. Inimical (adj.)

Meaning: tending to obstruct or harm. (विरोधी)

Synonyms: adversarial, adversary, antagonistic

Antonyms: friendly, hospitable, nonantagonistic

Sentence: These policies are inimical to the interests of society.

  1. Allegiance (noun)

Meaning: loyalty or commitment of a subordinate to a superior or of an individual to a group or cause. (निष्ठा)

Synonyms: loyalty, faithfulness, fidelity

Antonyms: disloyalty, faithlessness, falseness

Sentence: FBI demands its employees absolute allegiance to this bureau.

  1. Bereave (verb)

Meaning: be deprived of a loved one through a profound absence, especially due to the loved one’s death. (वंचित करना)

Synonyms: deprive, dispossess, strip

Sentence: The plane crash bereaved her of her husband.

  1. Geniality (adj.)

Meaning: the quality of having a friendly and cheerful manner. (नेकी)

Synonyms: friendliness, affability, cordiality

Antonyms: impoliteness, incivility, rudeness

Sentence: His geniality, reliability and ability made him a popular figure.

  1. Elapse (verb)

Meaning: (of time) pass or go by. (बीतना)

Synonyms: pass, go by/past, proceed

Antonyms: halt, hold, wait

Sentence: So a week or so may elapse between the first and the last eggs hatching.
