‘Vocabulary’
- Stave off (verb)
Meaning: cause or arrange for (something) to take place at a time later than that first scheduled. (टालना)
Synonyms: postpone, delay, defer
Sentence: The company managed to stave off bankruptcy for another few months.
- Squalor (noun)
Meaning: the state of being extremely dirty and unpleasant, especially as a result of poverty or neglect. (गंदगी)
Synonyms: dirtiness, squalidness, filth
Antonyms: purity, cleanliness, spotlessness
Sentence: I was shocked by the squalor of their surroundings.
- Precarity (noun)
Meaning: the state of being precarious or uncertain. (अनिश्चितता)
Synonyms: dicey, insecure, risky
Antonyms: advantageous, beneficial, good
Sentence: Many older workers face employment precarity as the job opportunities they once had have disappeared.
- Bellicose (adj.)
Meaning: demonstrating aggression and willingness to fight. (लड़ाकू)
Synonyms: belligerent, aggressive, hostile
Antonyms: nonaggressive, nonbelligerent, pacific
Sentence: The general made some bellicose statements about his country’s military strength.
- Forlorn (adj.)
Meaning: pitifully sad and abandoned or lonely. (अनाथ)
Synonyms: unhappy, sad, miserable
Antonyms: cheerful, accompanied, hopeful
Sentence: She was forlorn when she found out the trip had been canceled.
- Austerity (noun)
Meaning: sternness or severity of manner or attitude. (कठोरता)
Synonyms: sternness, austereness, severity
Antonyms: forbearance, indulgence, kindness
Sentence: His family spent years living in austerity during the recession.
- Senile (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person) having or showing the weaknesses or diseases of old age, especially a loss of mental faculties. (बूढ़ा)
Synonyms: aged, doddery, decrepit
Antonyms: adolescent, immature, young
Sentence: He is suffering from senile dementia.
- Biddable (adj.)
Meaning: meekly ready to accept and follow instructions. (आज्ञाकारी)
Synonyms: obedient, tractable, amenable
Antonyms: contumacious, defiant, disobedient
Sentence: Kate was the most biddable of daughters.
- Verity (noun)
Meaning: a true principle or belief, especially one of fundamental importance. (सचाई)
Synonyms: facticity, factuality, truth
Antonyms: falseness, falsity, fallacy
Sentence: no one can question your verity
- Depredation (noun)
Meaning: an act of attacking or plundering. (लूट-पाट)
Synonyms: plunder, looting, pillaging
Antonyms: rescue, salvage, salvation
Sentence: The entire area has suffered the depredations of war.
