The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  29th July 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Inundation (noun)

Meaning: a great flow of water or of something that overwhelms (सैलाब)

Synonyms: overflow, deluge, torrent

Antonyms: drought, dribble, drip

Sentence: The family’s shed was washed away in the last inundation.

  1. Heretofore (adv.)

Meaning: before now. (पहले)

Synonyms: hitherto, theretofore, yet

Antonyms: henceforth, henceforward, hereafter

Sentence: Diseases that heretofore were usually confined to rural areas.

  1. Grievous (adj.)

Meaning: (of something bad) very severe or serious. (क्षतिकर)

Synonyms: serious, severe, grave

Antonyms: gratifying, pleasing, comfortable

Sentence: The loss of his father was a grievous blow.

  1. Periphery (noun)

Meaning: the outer limits or edge of an area or object. (उपनगर)

Synonyms: margin, fringe, boundary

Antonyms: inner, inside, interior

Sentence: Houses have been built on the periphery of the factory site.

  1. Altercate (verb)

Meaning: dispute or argue noisily and publicly. (विवाद करना)

Synonyms: argue, argufy, bicker

Antonyms: accept, agree, assent

Sentence: Don’t altercate over such trivia.

  1. Compel (verb)

Meaning: force or oblige (someone) to do something. (मजबूर)

Synonyms: force, coerce into, pressurize into

Antonyms: allow, let, permit

Sentence: The law will compel employers to provide health insurance.

  1. Understate (verb)

Meaning: describe or represent (something) as being smaller, worse, or less important than it actually is. (परदा डालना)

Synonyms: play down, downplay, underplay

Antonyms: exaggerate, overdo, overdraw

Sentence: The press has understated the extent of the problem.

  1. Adage (noun)

Meaning: a proverb or short statement expressing a general truth. (कहावत)

Synonyms: aphorism, maxim, axiom

Sentence: The old adage “out of sight out of mind.”

  1. Tardiness (noun)

Meaning: the quality or fact of being late; lateness. (विलंब)

Synonyms: belatedness, unpunctuality, lateness

Antonyms: earliness, punctuality, prematurity

Sentence: His tardiness left the audience waiting for hours.

  1. Punctilious (adj.)

Meaning: showing great attention to detail or correct behavior. (सूक्ष्म)

Synonyms: meticulous, conscientious, careful

Antonyms: casual, easygoing, informal

Sentence: He was always punctilious in his manners.
