The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  29th March 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Menace (verb)

Meaning: threaten, especially in a malignant or hostile manner. (खतरा)

Synonyms: threaten, scare, imperil

Antonyms: guard, protect, save

Sentence: Africa’s elephants are still menaced by poaching.

  1. Complacency (noun)

Meaning: a feeling of smug or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one’s achievements. (शालीनता)

Synonyms: smugness, self-satisfaction, self-approval

Antonyms: humbleness, humility, modesty

Sentence: Doctors have warned against complacency in fighting common diseases.

  1. Synchronous (adj.)

Meaning: existing or occurring at the same time. (एक समय का)

Synonyms: coetaneous, coeval, coexistent

Antonyms: asynchronous, noncontemporary, nonsimultaneous

Sentence: Thus, tidal forces can lead to synchronous rotation.

  1. Amassed (verb)

Meaning: gather together or accumulate (a large amount or number of valuable material or things) over a period of time. (जमा कर रखे)

Synonyms: gather, collect, assemble

Antonyms: dispelled, dispersed, dissipated

Sentence: They amassed huge wealth by plundering the colonies.

  1. Fortuitous (adj.)

Meaning: happening by accident or chance rather than design. (आकस्मिक)

Synonyms: chance, unexpected, unanticipated

Antonyms: hapless, intentional, planned

Sentence: The similarity between the paintings may not be simply fortuitous.

  1. Unabated (adj.)

Meaning: without any reduction in intensity or strength. (अक्षीण)

Synonyms: assiduous, conscientious, diligent

Antonyms: indolent, lackadaisical, laggard

Sentence: Their effort continued unabated despite the many pitfalls they faced.

  1. Mediocrity (noun)

Meaning: the quality or state of being mediocre. (सामान्यता)

Synonyms: ordinariness, commonplaceness, averageness

Antonyms: distinction, excellence, excellency

Sentence: She’s a perfectionist who refuses to settle for mediocrity.

  1. Souvenir (noun)

Meaning: a thing that is kept as a reminder of a person, place, or event. (यादगार)

Synonyms: memento, keepsake, reminder

Antonyms: Forgotten

Sentence: The recording provides a souvenir of a great production.

  1. Corroborate (verb)

Meaning: confirm or give support to (a statement, theory, or finding). (की पुष्टि)

Synonyms: confirm, verify, endorse

Antonyms: confuting, disproving, refuting

Sentence: Recent research seems to corroborate his theory.

  1. Minuscule (adj.)

Meaning: extremely small; tiny. (छोटा)

Synonyms: tiny, minute, microscopic

Antonyms: mammoth, massive, gigantic

Sentence: All she gave him to eat was two minuscule pieces of toast.
