 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Abject (adj.)

Meaning: Showing, expressing, or offered in a spirit of humility or unseemly submissiveness. (अत्यंत)

Synonyms: humble, servile, meek

Antonyms: superior, arrogant, haughty

Sentence: The thought of working nights fills me with abject horror.

  1. Meander (verb)

Meaning: To move about from place to place aimlessly. (घूमना)

Synonyms: wander, roam, stroll

Sentence: Cows still meander through these villages.

  1. Flout (verb)

Meaning: To ignore in a disrespectful manner. (उल्लंघन)

Synonyms: disregard, despise, forget

Antonyms: accept, use, approve

Sentence: Some companies flout the rules and employ children as young as seven.

  1. Raiment (noun)

Meaning: Covering for the human body. (वस्त्र)

Synonyms: clothing, dress, costume

Sentence: I want nothing but raiment and daily bread.

  1. Conjugate (verb)

Meaning: To come together to form a single unit. (संयुग्म)

Synonyms: combine, fuse, connect

Antonyms: section, split, separate

Sentence: In 91% of the records the mother’s conjugate diameter was measured in centimetres: we preserved these units.

  1. Asunder (adv.)

Meaning: Into parts or pieces. (अलग-अलग)

Synonyms: apart, to pieces, piecemeal

Antonyms: together, tie, join

Sentence: The curtains had been drawn asunder.

  1. Rout (noun)

Meaning: Failure to win a contest. (हार)

Synonyms: defeat, loss, beating

Antonyms: victory, success, triumph

Sentence: The game ended in a total rout.

  1. Bizarre (adj.)

Meaning: Conceived or made without regard for reason or reality. (विचित्र)

Synonyms: absurd, insane, foolish

Antonyms: reasonable, realistic

Sentence: A bizarre invention that no one could figure out how to use.

  1. Vague (adj.)

Meaning: Not expressed in precise terms. (अस्पष्ट)

Synonyms: unclear, ambiguous, fuzzy

Antonyms: specific, explicit, clear

Sentence: Gave as vague a reply as he could, hoping not to give away the surprise.

  1. Vagabond (adj.)

Meaning: Traveling from place to place. (आवारा)

Synonyms: nomadic, nomad, itinerant

Antonyms: static, stationary, standing

Sentence: They live a vagabond life/existence, travelling around in a caravan.
